I'm feeling discouraged. My fiance and I were engaged on July 18th of this year, and are planning a May 20,2017 wedding due to funding and school. I really feel that time is dragging and its going to take forever for our big day to get here! I also feel guilty doing any planning because its so in...

I really feel that time is dragging and its going to take forever for our big day to get here! I also feel guilty doing any planning because its so in advance. Any tips from those who are having/have had a long engagement? Does time crawl or is it going fast for you?

My engagement will be one year and 2 months (engaged Jan. 31, 2015; wedding March 5, 2016. We are at the 200 day mark this week (woo hoo) and it is starting to get really real. You will be so happy that you had the opportunity to take your time, select good and reasonable vendors, save for those items you can't live without, etc. Get a really good timeline and start working on the big stuff now - venue(s) for wedding and reception. Look at dresses and find some cool trunk shows - you can get a designer gown for a steal! Good luck and happy planning!

We started wit a 3 yr engagement. The first year went by fast and then we decided to move it up a year. Time is flying by faster. For me I had it almost all planned so moving it up a year was not hard.

    Marissa,

I feel your pain! Our engagement will end up being 24 months total. A month and a half ago I decided I would start working on things. I've booked the venue and am now contacting caterers. The good thing about having all this time in between, is that you get your choice of vendors for the most part. Being able to pay your deposits and save is also huge! I've got at least 85% of everything planned in my head, so now it is just buying things as I can here and there. So far it has felt like it is crawling, especially when talking to other people who have very little interest, that is the discouraging part for me anyway.

I got engaged on Sept. 25th 2013. when we started talking about dates i wanted to get married the next year in 2014 and my fiancee said "lets do 2015, that sounds like a good year to get married" and i said"but that is such a long ways away." now here we are, getting ready to tie the knot on Saturday and we are sitting here wondering where almost 2 years of engagement went. It goes by fast! and the sooner you can get all your big stuff taken care of then better, because it makes it a lot less stressful.

I agree you shouldn't start planning. As it's too soon. But it doesn't hurt to save money , since you do have time to save.

    Congrats on getting engaged !

Engaged May 1st 2015, getting married Oct 3rd 2015- ~18 month engagement? Was busy at first booking vendors but we had first choice on everything. Then it was boring and we hit a lull, and now that we are less than 50 days out its getting really busy again! Just be patient! Plus having a long engagement gives you more time to save up for what you really want.

We aren't having a long engagement (less than 9 months), but it flies by! I feel like it was just two weeks ago that we had 200 days to go... now we're getting married in 5 days. Enjoy being engaged. I know I will LOVE being married to my wonderful FH, but I think it might have been nice to enjoy being engaged a bit longer.

We are having a 17 month engagement (been engaged since February). At times I feel like, "Damn I just want to be married already." But on the other hand, it's been really nice to be able to take everything slow. We have had plenty of time to research and shop around for vendors, look for discounts, get first pick at whatever we decide to book. And of course we have time to save money without feeling too overwhelmed. So far we have most of the big things booked - venue/catering, officiant, ceremony music, DOC, photographer, purchased my dress... Start looking into those sorts of things now so you don't feel so rushed as you get closer to the date. Also, for the first few months I relied heavily on these forums to be able to talk about the wedding incessantly, because when it's so far out, most of your friends and family don't really care to hear about it (or is that just the case with me? Lol). But now it feels like all of a sudden we are less than a year out...and I'm thinking time is going to fly.

My FH popped the question on the 4th of Jul this year. We decided on the 2nd of Jul 2017 for our wedding so that we had time to save both for the wedding and a family-moon to Disney. I'm keeping myself occupied with wedding planning and normal life. Yes, its just under two years out for me, but I have a lot of out of town guests (over half) and I want to have the guest list solidified and our location set to send out save the dates by this time next year. That sounds like its a long way off, but it can go quick. Especially with normal life involved.

I suggest taking it slow, relax in the fact that you do have more time to plan and finalize your plans, both financially and both of your vision for the wedding. Make sure your on the same page and that you have the same ideas.

Edited to add: We've started looking at vendors, covertly. Have a date night every once in a while and check out a location, try the food and/or wine if your thinking of that route.... You can take your time and not rush.

    Engaged July 25, 2014

It's actually been going by pretty quickly. A month or so after we got engaged, we booked our venue. For the next couple of months afterwards, we attended tons of bridal shows and won a free photographer (wedding & engagement pics) and gift cards to rental stations. Since then, we just book things here and there as we get the money saved. With being a full-time student, time went by really quickly during the semester.

Hi Marissa! We have the same date and equally long engagements! You're not alone Smiley smile I have booked my venue and I am starting to look around at dresses over Labor Day weekend. I am trying to wait until a little closer to the one year mark to do a lot of the bookings, but with my venue most are already selected for us! I am hoping May 207 comes super fast, for both of us!!

We got engaged on June 27, 2014 and are getting married 9/30/16. It honestly has flown by so far, although it feels like it starting to slow down now that I've booked all the big items and have nothing much else to do for now.

So now I just read the WW forums constantly and that helps Smiley smile

We are having a 2 year 6 month engagement. It has seemed soooo long and I can't wait to be married but it has been really good to take my time planning. I agree with other people though, try not to do your DIY stuff right away as you might change your mind.

By the time we get married we'll have had a 2 year and 1 month engagement. The first year dragged pretty bad but I used that time to book ALL of our vendors. It was really helpful because it let us know how much we had to save and also space out payments. I would Highly recommend starting now. Dont let anyone make you feel like its "too soon" tons of people said that to me, I didnt listen and I can honestly say it was the best. I've had a relatively relaxed planning time because I had a good deal of time to make decisions. Now all the big stuff is out of the way and we have 9 months to get everything else done.

So far since we got in the 1 year mark time has been flying, I didn't believe anyone when they said it would since last year dragged so much, but it really has been and Thank God for that!

We were engaged 16 months out. The earlier you can book your vendors the better in my opinion because you have a better chance of getting exactly what you want. I did that in the first couple of months. Then until January all I did was plan. I created boards on Pinterest, played with color schemes, ideas, DIY's. Figured out costs as my ideas came together. I decided to make boxed invitations and design the cards. Looked at dresses. I went dress shopping twice and found the dress I wanted in Nov but didn't purchase it until April just to make sure it was what I wanted. I bought a calendar and started scheduling out what I would do each month and when January came around I started buying and doing stuff. Once the one year hits it does go by fast, especially when you hit fall and the holidays come around and your enjoying the season.

We are having a 23 month engagement, it is crawling, I'm about to hit the one year mark and I can't wait because I heard that the one year mark makes it fly - I'll keep you posted.

There are definitely pros to the long engagement - one can save slowly for the day and chances are you are getting your first picks for all wedding choices. The big con is that you are going to second/third/fourth guess every decision you make.

First off, it's not too early to start planning at all! You should book your vendors asap. We're having a 1 year and 11 month engagement so only a little longer than yours. We got engaged June 2014. 2 weeks later we had our venue, and within the next 3-4 months we booked all of our major vendors (photo, video, dj, florist, photobooth) & I'm so happy we did. All of their prices went up in 2015 and not by a little. Also you get your first choice at vendors. Surprisingly even when I was looking, some vendors had a lot of dates already booked for 2016. I personally think long engagements are great because they give you time to save up & it reduces the stress by a lot. My wedding is 8 months away now & I haven't been stressed once. We already have all the money saved up for our wedding & are now able to save up for a home. Plus time will fly. I feel like I just got engaged & that was 14 months ago. Just enjoy it & start planning! Your wedding will be here before you know it

I would try to plan everything out on paper before finalizing anything. This way you can see how long it will take to do everything (ex. 3 weeks to work on DIY placecards, etc.) You will have enough time to create more DIY projects! You could get the venue and date soon especially if you have a specific date you want.

We will have an 11 month engagement. We didn't start looking at venues until this past weekend and still didn't finalize a date... but we will have approximately 9 months of planning. I am a little stressed because I feel rushed - especially with full time work, full time school and I will be in tax season up until 3 weeks before the wedding. I don't think we will have as many personalized items in the wedding unless FH steps up and does the projects! So I would relax, make timelines and visualize your wedding until you get a little bit closer!

We were engaged January 2014. Time definitely flies by. I got all my major vendors booked and then relaxed for a few months!
