Perfect wedding in the woods!

Our wedding at Camp Pinewood was everything we hoped for and more. The venue is absolutely stunning, and the staff were all friendly and helpful. Our guests had so much fun with the activities, and I know our more introverted guests really enjoyed being able to escape outside and enjoy the trails when the party got going in the lodge. We loved having so much space and so many fun things to do. We highly recommend camp pinewood to anyone looking for a highly unique, fun, outdoorsy wedding!

A weekend forest escape is the wedding I always dreamed of

This amazing team hosted our October wedding, and it was PERFECT. Our guests loved being able to stay in the cabins, which were warm and cozy (but bring a flashlight for your hikes outside, it gets real dark!), and the activities the day of the wedding were an absolute hit. We have so many fun photos and videos of our friends and family climbing and zip lining and shooting arrows, and the YMCA team made everyone feel safe and confident. The chapel was GORGEOUS (I definitely recommend mid-October if you want the most stunning backdrop of fall colors), and the Butler Lodge was the perfect place for dinner and dancing. Breakfast in the mornings was easy and tasty. This wedding was better than I could have ever dreamed, and it’s very much thanks to YMCA Camp Pinewood and their lovely, friendly, hard working staff!

Amazing wedding weekend

I can not imagine a better venue. Sid was amazing to work with - she was so responsive, and on top of every detail on the wedding weekend. The setting was absolutely beautiful, and all of our guests had the time of their lives. It was very private, but had easy access to Muskegon for our guests that didn't want to stay on site, although most of them did. It was amazing to have an entire weekend to spend with our guests. Everything was absolutely perfect.

Beautiful Venue! Some challenges

The venue is absolutely beautiful. It is remote, a large area for people to park, put rvs or tents. Cabins for around 200 people! Most of the cabins had views of the lake! There was a nice game room under the lodge with ping pong and a couple other games to play.

For 200$ per activity you can have camp staff host activities like rock climbing/ zip lining, archery, and water games/kayaking. The venue can also provide firewood and s’more supplies for bonfires at night as well.

Our challenges came in working with camp director Ryan. We initially toured the Venue with Bobby multiple times, who was great with communication and everything seemed very flexible and accommodating. The YMCA camp has strict rules in the contract you have to sign about lots of policies and procedures, specifically regarding alcohol use on the facilities. When we asked about this during our tour we were told the camp is much more flexible and will basically only enforce if things get out of hand.

As guests you are responsible to provide your own bedding for the cabins, any linens, plates and cups needed during the stay. We initially had trouble finding a bar service that had their own liquor license which we were told they needed to have. We also had to purchase a 200$ insurance policy covering the camp during our weekend.

We had the venue rented Friday from 3pm to Sunday at 11am. Our first activity we purchased was for Friday at 7pm. It rained all day up until about 6 and we had lots of family helping set up everything and get things looking pretty. Ryan did have the tables out and ready in the reception hall for us. There was little communication when we arrived and we often had to chase him down to get questions answered. After set up a lot of the adults set up camp chair to have a beverage and Ryan became very hostile about the camp rules being broken and cancelled the activity for all adults regardless of if they had anything to drink. He spoke very rudely with the bride and would not give eye contact when later addressed with groom. So with one activity being rained out and another cancelled we were out 400$ of activities paid for. The first night was definitely high stress and people on their toes because of this.

The wedding day on Saturday rained and we had to move the ceremony inside the lodge. It was beautiful! Bring your own decor to decorate near the fireplace! The lodge is listed as being able to seat 240 people, we had 170 people mostly adults and it was tight! We used 4 circle tables up front and one small table for bride and groom, long camp tables for most seating and had a row of tables for the food we had catered from Salvatores in Grand Rapids (12/10 for the food!).

On Saturday things we much smoother and the whole day was excellent even with lots of rain! The camp staff helped clear food from tables, they only had 2 people to clear food so our DJ ( TED corner DJ 12/10 stars!) helped clear tables as well! The staff we worked with were very kind and helpful!

Sunday we made breakfast for families but we’re not allowed to use the kitchen due to camp rules so we brought crock pots and things and could plug them in in the lodge area.

We would highly recommend the venue and experience. Our big thing to clear up would be to get very explicit direction in writing from whoever is the camp director at the time about all policies and things discussed during your tour.
