About
Since its formation, SPI has been instrumental in preserving the “Chocolate Church,” a fine Gothic Revival structure now housing the Center for the Arts; has begun the South End Survey, a meticulous investigation and recordation of buildings and their residents on the south end of Bath; and has recently completed much of the renovation of the Winter Street Church to the point where it is open for community activities. SPI has completed an architectural survey of all buildings built in Bath before 1920 and the first draft of a long overdue book on the history of the Bath area’s architecture. Two federally designated National Register Historic District as well as a city historic district exist in Bath due directly to the efforts of SPI. SPI continues to provide an educational program in Bath’s architecture to fourth grade students in the public schools.
