Beautiful Place, Great Staff, Easily Customize-able.

Beautiful location and super easy to work with. At the time of our wedding (July 2018), the caterer even worked with us in allowing us to provide our own food and beer menus. We provided some of our own recipes to the catering staff and they came out AMAZING. We also got to hand select the beer and wine (as long as the price was under a certain average amount per bottle).

To this date people say we had the best beer and wine of any wedding, ever (and the food was great too).

It did get pretty hot in the boathouse, so if someday even a floor AC unit or two can be placed in the upstairs area that may make it more comfortable, but overall the place is beautiful, the outside is amazing (and people can be outside all day/night if they want), and the hotel is very, very cute.

It was awesome working with the staff.

Wedding guest

I was at a wedding in 2018. It’s was beautiful. The food was amazing and refreshed quickly. I would use this for my venue if my guest list wasn’t so huge.

A Beautiful Venue with a Great Staff

We had a very small wedding (about 40 people) at the boathouse the fall of 2017. We knew Valcour was our venue based on the breath-taking views, the vast catering menu, and the friendly and responsive staff. Any questions we had, the staff responded quickly. We had a great tasting experience, and Valcour was very flexible with what we wanted. We opted to have family members make pies for dessert, and Valcour didn't give us any problems about having to pay for cake which other places would do. I would definitely recommend Valcour to anyone who wants a small intimate wedding at the boathouse.

Hidden Gem on Lake Champlain

I cannot say enough great things about the staff at Valcour Inn and Boathouse and what an amazing venue the Boathouse was for our special day. Our guests cannot stop raving about the venue and its location and the amazing food that their catering service provided. I wasn't sure if I wanted a formal wedding but it was so worth it and the Valcour team made it so easy. They take care of so much that you are truly able to relax and enjoy your day.

Best Wedding Decision We Made

Not only are the views absolutely spectacular, but the Valcour Inn staff has extensive and valuable experience in hosting weddings. The staff was extremely helpful without being intrusive or pushy. The staff is also very experienced in coordinating with the local vendors including florists, photographers, rental companies, caterer etc. Selecting this venue was the biggest factor in what was a truly beautiful wedding!!!!

Valcour is such a beautiful place to get married. It is right on the lake and the pictures were phenomenal. We had the ceremony out side and the reception in the boathouse and it was perfect. I would definitely suggest getting married there if you want a wedding on the water!

2025 Wedding

We were the first wedding of 2025 inside the boathouse. My fiancé and I were engaged in 2023, and searched for venues with character and beautiful landscape. We currently live on Lake Champlain, and loved the idea of getting married on the lake with the mountains in the background. Truly, Valcour has one of the most beautiful sceneries in the area.

After touring Valcour boathouse and the Inn, I was told by Valcour that since I was a SUNY Plattsburgh alumni that I would receive a discount on renting the boathouse. I was also told that if we bought out the cottage and all of the rooms at the inn, I would also receive a discount for this. We had a lot of guests from out of town, so blocking out and using the rooms at the inn with the discount only made sense. My fiancé and I left the tour excited about our future wedding, and went home to research the pamphlets we were given to make a decision.

Inside the pamphlets, it was noted that couples getting married and having their reception on the property had the ability to reserve the downstairs at the Inn for no cost towards their rehearsal dinner (not including food by Chartwells). I say all of this, because when we called to say we made a decision, we were then told different information. All of the sudden, I was not able to use both my SUNY Plattsburgh alumni discount for the boathouse and the room-buyout discount at the Inn. We were also told they were not honoring the rehearsal dinner space anymore—even though this is the information given to us in the pamphlets. I had to argue this back and forth for days, to finally come to an agreement.

We signed our contract in January of 2024, and had 17 months to plan for our wedding. When signing a contract with Valcour, operated by SUNY Plattsburgh, you also agree to use Chartwells as your caterer.

Things to take note of since signing our contract in January of 2024 to our wedding date: the Valcour coordinator had changed 3 times with delayed notice to their customers; the Chartwells coordinator was also changed and there was no point of contact for weeks until the director of Chartwells sent out a delayed email. I had spent DAYS/WEEKS trying to email and get ahold of my contacts with Valcour and Chartwells— to which I thought there was something wrong with MY email not allowing messages to be sent.

The downfall of Valcour Inn & Boathouse is being run by SUNY Plattsburgh. There are too many hens behind the scene, and there is a lack of communication between Chartwells staff and Valcour staff. There is proof in this when staff and coordinators are coming and going every other week. I had to beg to make my Valcour and Chartwells payments, and half the time nobody knew which member to contact to make the payment to.

Ten days before my wedding, I was notified by someone I had never spoken with from Chartwells in the past 17 months that the linens I picked out 12 months ago were actually not orderable (however they were in the Chartwells linen catalog I was given by Chartwells). I would also like the mention that a week prior to this notification we had a walk-through with Valcour and Chartwells, and in this meeting I was told by the Chartwells coordinator that the “navy blue tablecloths were a beautiful color” and he loved them. I also heard through the grape-vine that this man was let go a few days prior to my wedding. Love that. Let’s just say my wedding coordinator (God bless her) was able to obtain these “beautiful navy blue tablecloths” from Chartwells for our wedding.

If there were any mishaps the day of our wedding, I didn’t know because my wedding coordinator did an amazing job keeping the circus together. There were a few things I noticed:

Valcour: Fix your damn ceiling in the boathouse so that water doesn’t come through the ceiling when it rains. I was embarrassed for you.

The Food: At our tasting, the food was AMAZING. We loved everything brought out to us, and there were no complaints. I’m unsure if the chef changed as well? The food at the rehearsal dinner was horrible. The chicken parm was burnt. Our “garlic bread” was food stamp breadsticks. At our wedding, half the tables (including the bride and groom table) did not receive the rolls and butter. We ordered mashed potatoes but somehow ended up with some other potato concoction that my pregnant tastebuds couldn’t handle. The prime rib was also overcooked. This was disappointing because I had heard from past couples that the food had been really good, and I was also looking forward to the food because of our tasting prior.

Chartwells Service: Where do I start? I believe half of the staff are probably SUNY Plattsburgh students with little to no knowledge on serving or catering. I had to REMIND the staff about the wine service we had purchased, and half the tables were still not offered wine at dinner. They were serving dinner out of order (table 4 where my parents and grandparents were sitting received their food after table 9). When myself and the groom went around to to greet everyone at the tables, the catering staff often pushed in front of us and had no awareness of their surrounding when grabbing dishes. It was like they were being held against their will to work. At least pretend you want to be there, that’s what you get paid for. This is someone’s wedding.

In summary, if I went back in time would I still choose to get married here? No, I would travel somewhere else with a similar view. I would like to give props to the new Valcour coordinator, who remained professional and reliable the last couple months I was able to work with him. I am writing this review in hopes that these changes can be made for future couple.

Wedding venue/ catering

Let’s begin by saying the wedding was at Valcour inn and boathouse with Chartwell catering the event because it’s exclusive to Valcour Inn and boathouse! We occupied the entire venue, the inn, the rooms, the boat house, and the house on the property buyer beware of the charges for each one of these places buyer. Beware when catering with Chartwell that you get the food that you ordered because we did not there were cheap substitutions. It was embarrassing. Well over $10,000 worth of food simply ruined. I do have some pictures. I wonder if I could attach a picture of their version of boneless chicken Cordon Bleu if I could attach a picture, I will. This started on Friday with the mishaps in the end, not being able to gain entry into a room someone other than Richard Apparently was hired to be on the premises. I had no idea no one contacted me our water, orange juice continental breakfast was not that none was served on Saturday morning with the exception of some muffins and we had coffee and two different types of creamer which that was good Saturday morning. We did have some more muffins seven count seven croissants for 18 people staying in the end, they finally brought in a 12 pack of bottled water after telling us that we would get two bottles of water per room per day. We never got that The list goes on and on of the horrible things that happen the lack of communication and the lack of response from Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday today’s now Tuesday and I get a one sentence sorry will investigate the matter, no breach of contract. I was very embarrassed. I couldn’t even begin to tell you How many errors were made in the food, food that we test tasted, which was fabulous which we bragged about to our families that they were gonna love the food. no that is not what happened so buyer beware it is a beautiful place, but they did not follow through with their contract !! we barely had any continental breakfast. Let’s add to the fact that Sunday morning Sunny D appeared in the cooler Sunny’s d and only a few bottles at that fresh seasonal fruit. We lived near an apple Orchard. They had great big oranges that weren’t good at all. I will say the coffee was good. I just don’t know what else to tell you other than the lack of communication seems to be their biggest issue there was no one communicated to the changes that were made in our appetizers in our rehearsal dinner and our wedding venue dinners nothing was communicated that they were gonna put a chicken with a bone in it in place up. it wasn’t chicken Cordon Bleu. I don’t know what else to tell you and our steak New York steak with a peppercorn cream sauce no, that’s not what we got roasted fresh vegetables taste test. It was carrots here we got three little tiny pieces of carrot on a plate some people got two some got one. The list goes on and on and what do you do when you’re at an event with 90 people eating there was no recourse. There was no no communication. The chef alleged chef left. I had eight people eight plates of food that didn’t come out of that kitchen. Three vegetarian plates were never served as the worst yet my brother and sister-in-law who were guests of this wedding didn’t get a plate of food and when I asked, I was told the chef left what chef he never checked in with me. None of you checked in with me to see if everyone was served again poor poor, poor communication and I call a breach of contract, but we’ll see what develops but buyer beware
We're all about trust. Our community relies on honest reviews to help you make those big decisions with ease.
