About

The House of the Seven Gables is a historic wedding venue located in Salem, Massachusetts. First built in 1668, this house became famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne when he wrote a novel in 1851 with this house as the setting. Couples will be surrounded by lush gardens and waterfront views at this unique, vintage venue. With charming period homes, colonial revival gardens, and a picturesque oceanfront, this venue offers a stunning backdrop for you and your guests to create new memories.

Facilities and Capacity

Couples can accommodate up to 200 guests at this romantic venue. For an outdoor affair, there’s the Seaside Lawn which can accommodate both your ceremony and reception. If you prefer to dance the night away indoors, both the Plumsock and Holyoke Rooms offer enough space to seat up to 75 guests around the spacious dance floor. Intimate gatherings are welcome to use the Hooper-Hathaway House, which can accommodate 50 guests for a cocktail-style reception. Parking is available onsite, with wheelchair accessibility to ensure everyone arrives at the venue with ease.

Services Offered

The House of the Seven Gables has an on-site event coordinator to oversee your day. They will be ready to work with you throughout your planning process to ensure you get the most out of the grounds. Chairs and tables will be provided and set up into any arrangement you prefer. The team can also provide soon-to-be-weds with their list of trusted vendors to help them bring their nuptial vision to life.

History

This home was built for Captain John Turner in 1668. Turner was the head of one of the most successful maritime families in the New England Colonies. Captain Samuel Ingersoll purchased it in 1782 and it was his daughter, Susanna Ingersoll, who was the second cousin of Nathaniel Hawthorne. He visited her often in the mid-1800s, which is where he got his inspiration for his novel.

    Covid wedding

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the cancellation of my destination wedding. Our respective families did not feel comfortable with traveling but still insisted on a wedding prior to any makeup plans we made in relation to travel date. We met with the House of Seven Gables representative, Deb Costa, who was very understanding of the situation and helped us with a new plan. In seven weeks we planned and held a COVID friendly family only "Micromony". Deb was very responsive to the many needs and question I had during such a short time frame. The Venue is beautiful and extremely well kept. We could not have been happier with this second plan and our families loved the venue as well. I am very grateful to have found such a nice venue last minute and would highly recommend to those looking for future events.

The House of the Seven Gables's reply:

Thank you Kelly for choosing the House of the Seven gables for your wedding. It was my pleasure to work with you and help create such a special day.

    Beautiful venue, incredible experience

We worked with the Gables as the site our summer wedding. The staff was incredibly helpful from the start, with their knowledge of Salem and vendors in the area they played a big role in helping us plan our whole event. We decided to have our ceremony and cocktail hour at the site, and our reception at the Hawthorne nearby. They were very flexible with all of the options, and we really felt like they were partners in helping us plan the best event possible.

Ultimately, COVID-19 ended up throwing a wrench in all of our plans, and the Gables as more supportive than we could possibly have imagined. They were entirely focused on us, with all of the challenges everyone was facing. It meant a tremendous amount to us to have their support through the whole experience. We wholeheartedly recommend the House of Seven Gables. No matter what obstacles life throws at you (and with any wedding there are plenty), they are in your corner from start to finish.

The House of the Seven Gables's reply:

Thank you for such a lovely review. Seeing how happy you were on your wedding day and seeing the love all around you I was honored to have been a part of your day.
    Take care
