This home was built for Captain John Turner in 1668. Turner was the head of one of the most successful maritime families in the New England Colonies. Captain Samuel Ingersoll purchased it in 1782 and it was his daughter, Susanna Ingersoll, who was the second cousin of Nathaniel Hawthorne. He visited her often in the mid-1800s, which is where he got his inspiration for his novel.
