History
Founded in 1888 by Miss Claribel Thompson and Mrs. Lydia Nash, The Shakespeare Club is known for being the first women’s exclusive club in Southern California, created out of a mutual interest in establishing a literary group that sought to expand philanthropic, educational, and cultural ideas. Since that time, this club has spearheaded the movement of progressive ideas, including public restrooms, public kindergarten, juvenile court, and the Pasadena Humane Society. This club has many long-held traditions, including contributing to prizes for the Tournament of Roses, and participating in the Queen’s Luncheon since 1952.
