About
I am the part-time Rabbi of Congregation B'nai Jeshurun of Staten Island (a
Conservative Jewish synagogue) and work as a spiritual counselor for
the Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice and Palliative Care. I
reside on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with my lovely wife Dora. I
was raised Orthodox, and was ordained in Yeshiva Collegial Machane
Menachem in Petropolis, Brazil.
I offer pre-wedding counseling to help you build a solid foundation
for your next stage together. The counseling is primarily focused on
communication techniques, emotional boundaries, learning to share
responsibilities in an equitable way, building a Jewish home, managing
expectations for the wedding and after the wedding. In addition, I
will work with you to plan a beautiful, seamless authentically Jewish
wedding ceremony. I will help you with the processing of your marriage
license, supervision of the creation and signing of the ketubah document, review of the
rings to adhere to Jewish law, and a dvar torah/reflection to make the
ceremony more meaningful.
I pride myself on providing sensitivity to your unique needs as
individuals and a couple. I also, offer an authentic feel to your
service with recitation in both Hebrew and English (and throw in a few
Yiddish expressions for your Bubby) with explanations appropriate to
the audience. When appropriate I like to throw a few jokes in to
lighten the mood.

Reviews of Rabbi Sam Kastel
Professional Network & Endorsements
Rabbi Sam has a wonderful warm and calming demeanor about him. He takes a personal interest in all who cross his path and couples who work with him to officiate at their wedding are very lucky! His warmth and dry sense of humor combined with his sensitivity make the experience a memorable one. When I am unable to officiate a wedding for a couple due to a conflict with the date, Rabbi Sam is always the first person I recommend!
