We were incredibly lucky to have Cantor Re’ut officiate our wedding. From the very beginning, she brought such warmth, kindness, and a genuine sense of care to the entire process. When we were wedding planning, my (now) Husband and I wanted to craft a wedding that honored both of our backgrounds and cultures, and was true to the uniqueness of us as a couple. As an interfaith and interracial couple, this was a bit daunting. We knew we wanted our close friends to marry us, so we were looking for a Cantor or Rabbi to specifically help us write our Ketubah and craft a Ketubah ceremony.  Before meeting Re’ut, we had talked with a few Cantors and Rabbis who didn’t quite share our vision, or gave us a hard time about what we wanted to do. From the jump though, Re’ut was different—immediately warm and funny, we instantly bonded. Her first response to hearing our vision was: “I LOVE THAT! What a beautiful way to honor you both as individuals and as a couple.” She also loved the untraditional wedding we were planning: a ceremony in a public park (Pier 17), and then taking the public ferry to the reception in Brooklyn. I was so worried what she’d think about us doing everything in public and what would happen if we couldn’t find a private room for the Ketubah. I need not have worried: she was immediately game for the entire thing! Hearing this, I knew she was someone we could trust and confide in.  

We first connected with Re’ut about 6 months before our wedding, and met several times via zoom to craft the Ketubah and Ketubah Ceremony. Before our first official session, Re’ut gave us a questionnaire that helped her get to know us as individuals and as a couple. This also informed how she offered suggestions and advice. She used this questionnaire and the follow-up session to encourage my Husband to express his feelings as he slowly opened up to her, and in times when one of us couldn’t find the words to communicate something. This questionnaire also informed the Ketubah writing process, where she suggested language for us to use that captured us as a couple, and then workshopped it with us to make it truly ours. After writing the Ketubah, we shifted into shaping the Ketubah Ceremony. Here, Re’ut infused elements of my husband’s Jamaican background to make it a ceremony that honors both our traditions and celebrations. In fact, as Re'ut read the text during the Ketubah ceremony, I heard my (now) mother-in-law tell my mom how beautiful the vows were and how happy she was to hear Jamaican phrases included.  

Logistics wise, Re’ut is incredibly flexible and understanding. Because all our meetings were virtual, she was really flexible about meeting times and durations. When she recognized emails were difficult for me to get back to, she suggested we text instead (which was much easier for me!). She truly worked with my crazy schedule, which we were so thankful for, especially as we got closer to the big day.  

In every conversation, Re’ut leads with love and curiosity. She checked in with us at every stage of the process, and offered kindness and empathy when I shared my stresses (regardless of whether they were wedding-, work-, or life-related). Re’ut is someone you know genuinely cares about you and your wellbeing, who can work with anyone. She’s someone I know will always be part of our lives, even beyond our wedding day. I know she will always be here for us, for both the biggest and tiniest life moments, and I am forever grateful!

From the moment we first met with Reut to decide who would officiate our wedding, we knew she was the easy choice! She was extremely kind and comforting from the start. She genuinely cares about making the day special and specific to what you want. Reut was flexible in crafting the ceremony to our desire and did not push anything we didn’t want.

Cantor Reut brought spirituality and warmth to my son's Bar Mitzvah preparation and service. She spent time to get to know my son and to make sure he felt connected to the experience. Cantor Reut's gentle and soulful approach was much appreciated. She also encouraged him to take on more and to challenge himself and and this was great and panned out. Cantor Reut spent a lot of time designing the service and the program with us to make it personal and meaningful. The result was a wonderful service that our guests couldn't stop gushing about. Since we designed the service ourselves, we were able to honor our close family members and gave them roles so they also felt involved. The service kept our guests interested and wove in customized elements that made it unique. We loved having the service at the venue right before the party because it made the party more meaningful and made it clear what this is all about. We had an interfaith ceremony and with every step she ensured that we were both able to understand the process and meaning in a Jewish traditional ceremony, and was always willing and able to include aspects of my husband's religion and culture. With Re'ut we were able to build the most beautiful ceremony that blended our backgrounds, beliefs, and hopes, and her singing added an additional layer of magic.
