We really wanted a place with character, and with Eubie Blake, we got an indoor/outdoor cocktail hour on the 1st floor (both the green space outside and the gallery inside) followed by dinner and dancing on the 4th floor (with built-in bookcases and 360-degree views of Baltimore through large windows), all in a place that they seemed really focused on their community-centric role while understanding we were renting it as an event venue (a nice bonus for us). The best part was how straightforward everything was. The contract (right on the website) doesn’t include a lot of the WIC nonsense (required vendors, pickup/dropoff rules, etc.), and their prices are amazing, especially given the neighborhood (less than half of many of the other places we were considering). We were able to rent each floor by the hour (with prep hours discounted), and it included all of the tables/chairs we needed (and setup). In fact, since the 4th floor is a music venue, it also had professional-grade speakers, lighting, board, etc. (which meant a discount from our DJ, since he didn't have to bring as much). We had some concerns because of the limited info online, but they all proved to be non-issues. The weekly dance class on-site at the same time? Their precautions meant we didn’t see/hear anything (and we loved that they kept their commitment). Hospital across the street? We didn’t hear anything during either our tours or reception. I was worried about the A/C, and while it was a toasty by the end, it was ice cold at the beginning and I was dancing in a heavy wedding dress, so nothing to lose sleep over. You have to be flexible on some things (e.g. limited visiting hours, the 4th floor is royal blue and the tables there have to stay) but all things we made work (e.g. turned cafe tables into cookie/gift tables). And while Dominic seemed new to events at the beginning, he didn’t by the end and was always friendly and professional (and did everything promised). Overall, a great choice for us.
