In the summer of 1914, the Chatham Bars Inn opened its doors and welcomed the world, beginning a tradition of gracious hospitality that lives on to this day. Prominent Boston stockbrocker Charles Ashley Hardy acquired the land in 1912, and within one year, the main inn, nine seaside cottages, and a golf course had been constructed. With deep-sea and harbor fishing available at its doorstep, the Inn quickly became a popular hunting lodge for smortsmen. The Chatham Bars Inn has hosted the Dutch Royal Family, Henry Ford, and William Rockefeller and became a year-round resort in 1988, with extensive renovations taking place over the course of several years.
