Darleen, on March 5, 2015 at 3:12 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

Okay so I am using powerpoint 2013. Is there away to have it randomly shuffle the pictures? Also I know you can add a song but I want to add multiple songs to continue playing while everyone is entering. Help please.

I have gone through many of the tutorials and it is not telling me how to play multiple songs back to back. It does show you how to add A song but not multiple. Also when it comes to having the pictures in the slideshow do a random play, I am not finding it.

You could always used a standard movie maker. You just drag and drop photos into the box, arrange how you want them to appear. And then set timers for each image and include multiple songs to play throughout the photo video.

Agree with @Valarie - Windows Movie Maker is really the best way to do it. And it's so easy to use!

Yeah, I don't think powerpoint would be the best tool for what you're looking for.

Unfortunately, neither PowerPoint nor Movie Maker can display things in a random order. Whichever one you use, the photos are going to display in the same order, every time you play the show. But you can fake it.

The concept is fairly similar either way, and the product will look the same to your guests -- so if you're already fairly comfortable with PP, stay with PP. No sense "reinventing the wheel" and spending time redoing everything in Movie Maker.

Once you have finished making slides for all of your photos, go to the slide sorter. Click select all, copy, and paste. You'll instantly double the length of your slide show -- and you can drag-and-drop to rearrange the slides in whatever order you like.

If you're familiar with PP, you know you can set each slide to display for a certain amount of time, then automatically go to the next one. Usually 6 seconds gives people just enough time to admire each photo without them flying by too fast, or sitting on each one too long. Six seconds also makes the math easy -- 10 slides equals one minute (maybe a few seconds longer than a minute, when you factor in the transition time between each slide). Yes, you can apply the same length to every slide at once; you don't have to do this for each slide individually (I think that can also be done from the slide sorter screen, but I could be wrong).

OK, so now that you have your slide order and timing done, it's time to add music. Assuming you already know how to add sound to a slideshow, add your first song to the first slide of the show. Then run the show and wait for the song to end. When it does, hit Esc to stop the slideshow -- the editor should be on the slide that was up when you hit Esc. That's where you add your second song. Lather, rinse, repeat until you've covered the entire show with music.

It's unlikely your last song will end at the same time you get to the last slide, so you may need to decide whether to delete a song (and the slides that went with it) or add additional slides to cover the rest of the last song. On your final slide of the show, you can choose the option to make PowerPoint loop back to the very beginning of the show, if you want it to run continuously.

Just one technical issue: PowerPoint will only "embed" small audio files into the slide show (.ppt or .pptx) file... the sound feature was designed primarily for people narrating individual slides. Songs are usually too big, so they will remain saved separately. If you are designing your slide show on the same computer that you'll be using to play it, this should not be a problem. But if you are designing on one machine, and planning to play on another, you need to make sure ALL the files (the slide show AND the songs) move together -- and that they're all in the same "relative" locations. Otherwise, PowerPoint on the "play" computer will not "know" where to find your music. An easy way to avoid this problem is to put your slide show and songs into a single folder on a thumb drive, and always use that thumb drive whenever you work on your slideshow, and use it for the "play" computer. Would be a good idea to test it out in advance just to be sure everything works as you intended. Worst case scenario, you'll have a slide show but you might not have the music... but if guests are milling about, chatting, etc., they may not notice anyway.
