Searching for a NON-UGLY Mother of the Bride Dress

Laura, on April 26, 2011 at 5:03 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 37

Why is it that every mother of the bride dress I have found are eggplant or avacado green; taffeta, sequins, even *gulp* feathers?! My mother helped me be the woman I am today and is paying for my wedding and honeymoon, I want her to look as gorgeous as I do on my special day!

My friend seems to be having the same trouble finding a dress for her Mom as well.

Any recommendations for good MOB websites or stores that carry dresses that don't remind you of the 80's or your 95 year old Grandma (not that my stylish Grandma would have ever been seen in that type of thing but you catch my drift)

Thanks!

I'm on the same page. Can't find the perfect dress for my mom. My FMIL told me yesterday that she bought a gown for our wedding and said she would send me pictures and info via email. So I'm waiting

I am a bride, and I will be a MOB next year.

First...stop looking for MOB designs. Holy crap, they were all so darn matronly. Go for a bridesmaid dress. I found mine at Alfred Angelo in a champagne. It has a lace up back, and a sweep train. I will have the train removed for my daughter's wedding.

THey have dresses in plus size too. HOwever, their regular size run slightly less than a standard size.

    Good luck!

I got my MOG dress at Igigi.com. They only sell plus-sized dresses. However, unlike a lot of other plus-sized dress designers, they make dresses that flatter your figure instead of just enclosing it in a tent. Here is the one I wore:

My mom has had some luck with Bridesmaid dresses by Mary's Bridal. These BM dresses are less expensive than MOB dresses and all come with a wrap/jacket and a purse. Although they are BM dresses they are more mature than most BM dresses, yet they do not have that "Old Lady-ish" feel to them.

2d....That is an awesome dress. I need plus for my top. It is difficult to find plus sized clothing that are not made by the tent maker.

Yeah, my mom's dress is the last big thing to find! We've been EVERYWHERE. The hardest part is that we're looking for a certain length. Time is running out, so ordering one is probably going to be impossible soon. *sigh*

I just want her to feel good about herself and have something beautiful to wear!

Try nordstrom.com. they have special occasion dresses. Most are under $200.

I agree with Carole, do not look for MOB dresses. They are frumpy, IMHO.

I bought my dress at Nordstrom (not online, but at the actual store). It was far from "matronly".

The photo of the bottom of the dress is closest to the actual color. It was a spagetti strap dress with a beaded shawl that could also be tied at the waist, if desired.

My mom and FH's mom both found their dresses at Boston Store. Both are plus sized and really nice looking. Not matronly at all!

Carole B love that dress. My mom is wearing a pant suit. She doesn't like dresses.

Kathy....No frump for us. Your dress is pretty.

Maui....lolol to "kinda hoochy". Actually, when my daughter saw my wedding dress, she kind of hinted it was not your traditional MOB dress. My reply was, "I am not the traditional mother of the bride." I also told her I would keep my shawl on, yeah, right. Smiley winking

Here is another idea. Set up a free personal shopping session at a department store like Macy's or Lord and Taylor or Bloomingdales.

My mother in law is going to get hers at Nordstrom. She found one online in a nice cobalt blue -- I wish I saved the link!

It could be worse -- my mom refuses to wear anything but a floral sundress that she wears to church sometimes, but is so worn-down and awkwardly-cut that you'd expect an elderly woman to be wearing it while she's getting her hair done.

(But hey I love my mom and I know her quirks, so I ain't pushing her on it, lol).

Holy crap... when I read this, I didn't see the wrapped title, and all I saw was "looking for a non-ugly mother of the bride"

    That's hilarious!

@beachbum...Thank you. My mother wore a dressy pant suit to my first wedding.

@Batman...I tried that one on. It is a very pretty dress.
