I lost my e-ring diamond center stone yesterday. advice

Personally, I'm an overly anxious person anyway so had my e-ring modified to a more secure setting. Yes, it's not as dainty looking as it's got wider prongs, but I feel like the stone is much more secure.

Perhaps see if they can make the prongs slightly wider to hug the stone more, or as them about adding another pair at the sides? It may be do-able as an extra by the folk who'd fix it anyway.

I would definitely get stronger prongs, my FH and I were worried about this too and I got a double prong, basically all four prongs are about twice the width of a normal prong, you can tell in the picture. Just like MissGeek, it isn't as dainty, but it still looks beautiful. I wouldn't go for a new ring completely unless you don't like what you have for some reason.

By the way, really glad you found the diamond!!

I'm going to look into both adding additional prongs to my original setting or getting the double prongs. If the quotes are too ridiculous, I may need to get a new setting with either double or more prongs. I wonder if the halo settings are more secure.

Oh wow, when I first read this I thought you'd completely lost the center stone... you're lucky you didn't lose it! I would probably have the head on the ring replaced. It looks like the prongs in the picture are pretty little; you could definitely go thicker like HIH's and it would still look fine.

It's very pretty! i'd probably add a couple more prongs; the look is very delicate and you don't want to destroy that but keep it safer!

I would say get a stronger setting also. One of my prongs broke the first day I got the ring (it's vintage) and we took it to Jared's and they recreated the whole basket so we wouldn't have to worry anymore.

Typically with an oval diamond you really only want/need 4 prongs. A halo wouldn't help because in an oval diamond with a halo still only has 4 prongs and a half doesn't actually provide more security at all unless you get a bezel around your diamond....which I probably wouldn't suggest. Are you wearing your ring all the time? Are you getting it checked every couple of months?

@Heather A, no I wasn't getting it check that never crossed my mind. I just didn't know that maintenance check ups were needed. When I go to jeweler this weekend; I will look into it. thanx

To add on to what @Heather said, I have a lifetime warranty on mine - as long as I get it checked every six months, they are responsible if any stones fall out, etc. Then they also clean it for you so it comes out looking brand new every few months!

6 months, like staci said is exactly how long you should be getting it checked. Though there's no such thing as over checking and I love it when my clients come into my store to have them checked because then I know they arnt going to have any issues and we clean it at the same time so it looks amazing. Especially with an oval, if even one of your prongs has something wrong with it that stone can slide right out. I think if you get it repaired and then checked every 6 months you'll be fine and won't need to have it changed.

My stone is a pear shape. My jeweler is putting my stone in a basket and putting gold around it to protect the tip of the pear stone. I don't think mine will be going anywhere LOL. Ask about a basket setting and see what they say. A lot of jewelers don't use them anymore.

One of the diamonds on my ring fell out the day after FH proposed. One of the settings was loose. I was at work and almost had a panic attack! All the kids jumped up and started looking on the floor to help me find it (I love these guys!). We never found it. I was so nervous about telling FH but he was surprisingly calm.

Now I'm constantly checking it to make sure all the diamonds are on it.

Omg, I would have died of shock! That's the best possible way the story could have ended lol Another vote for 6 prongs -- Plus, I think they're prefect for round or oval diamonds, cause they give a less square look than 4 prongs.

I am SO glad you found the diamond... I would absolutely die. My antique stone is set in a 4-prong platinum setting. I wanted it to look like it was 'floating' not surrounded by metal even if that metal did keep it safe. You can have your jeweler replace the head (Prong/basket) with platinum and that should keep it pretty safe. Platinum does not wear like gold does and you will never have to have it re-plated or replace worn prongs. It is one of the strongest metals. I do not take my diamond off except to sleep and it has been banged around quite a bit and has never even had a wiggle after over a year on my finger. Good luck!

OMG, you ladies are fabulous and have great ideas that I'm taking to my Jeweler this weekend. My DH just was glad I found it. But to find something that you didn't know that you lost, was cra cra. Anywho, I'm hoping he can fix it on the same day. thanx again
