Engagement Ring Concerns

Private User, on July 23, 2014 at 6:17 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 29

So today my SO and I went out and bought my ring. Originally I had picked out a 1 carat solitaire when we first started looking however when we went to the store to make the purchase the diamond they had available in that setting was very flawed. I ended up deciding on a .70 carat with a gorgeous setting and very good clarity/colour diamond. But now I'm second guessing the size! I'm worried it's going to look small on my size 7. 5 finger. I was happy at the store but now I'm second guessing myself. Did anyone else have similar worries? If anyone has a .5-.7 carat ring with size 7.5 fingers I'd love to see a photo to get an idea of size ratio - thanks!

I did not want a bigger stone at the time with my ering but after a couple of months I decided I went to small and we upgraded the ring. Personally, I like large stones, so the bigger it is the happier I am! I also have small hands so I don't think a stone can be too large. If your budget allows, can you get a better quality 1 carat? If not, I would go with the better quality diamond over the flawed stone.

I agree. Upgrade as you can. If you can afford to do so now, and it will make you happy, you should do it. But like Nicoletta said, I would go cut and clarity over size for now if the budget does not allow.

There was a post around here not too long ago about bigger diamonds versus better quality, and it was a fairly divided topic but most agreed that clarity and cut is better than size. I have a .8 on my finger, size 7, and I think it's perfect because the clarity and setting makes it sparkle a TON. The diamond is HIGH quality. I don't have a pic right now because I'm on my work computer though, sorry!

Yeah the budget doesn't really allow a the same quality in a 1 carat but I never considered upgrading so that's a great option if later down the line I still want the bigger stone - L+A that makes me feel much better! My ring does have a great clarity and the setting is really nice so I hope that works to make it look proportionate on my finger despite the smaller size.

I wouldn't worry about it. Wouldn't you both rather spend the extra money on something else?! It sounds like your diamond is very beautiful and there was a previous discussion a while ago about clarity vs size, and when I had read the comments I believe that the clarity side was winning.

Yeah exactly. I don't know what setting you have, but I have a princess cut solitaire with small pave diamonds on the band. Which honestly I think makes the diamond itself look bigger, and it helps with the sparkle a lot! But yes, down the road you can always upgrade. I know that the store FH bought my ring/band in will let me trade in my diamond during whenever at my lifetime, and put the appraised value towards a new diamond. I would never dare because mine's perfect BUT it's definitely something you should ask your jeweler if they do, I think it's common?

Thanks ladies! Makes me feel much better about the decision to spend the extra money on clarity rather than size, I think it's a lot of last minute anxiousness about finally making a decision on the ring, there are so many options its hard to make a final decision and stick to it! But I did love it enough to choose it over other options in the store so I'm sure I will love it when it comes back from being sized -- and yes I do think of jeweller offers that service as well so it's something to consider!

It just depends what is important to you. I wanted shiny and I got a 1.2 tcw moissy. 1 ct center moissy, .2 ct diamond halo. I didnt actually care if it was a diamond and moissy's warmth doesn't bother me, so I was thrilled with it. Some cuts also face up more so "look" bigger than other cuts.

I always told my FH he could tie a string around my finger and as long as I was with him, that's all that mattered. In the end, we chose a Swarovski ring for our engagement. I'm notorious for losing or breaking my jewellery (sadly, I'm on E-ring #3 due to this). People are always shocked to find out my ring is not diamond; it looks pretty legit.

How are "last-minute jitters" a factor when your wedding is in 2016?

I have a .96 ice blue sapphire and size 10 ring (my family all has chunky fingers, even my size 4 sis wears a 7 ring). When I first got the e-ring, I thought it looked bigger in the store so I was kinda bummed. A week later, it didn't look so small. A couple days later, it looked small. It totally depends on the day for me whether I want a bigger one or not, lol. I joked (partially serious though) with FH that for every ten year anniversary, I should go up a carat. :-)

I am not much into jewelry, and until we got engaged I wore none. My FH bought what he can afford to pay with cash (debit card) from Helzberg. It is 3 smaller diamonds in a 3 loop/knot design. I love the setting and the ring. Mine is different from anyone else who posted on here, and I am happy with it.

Here is a nearly identical ring

I think a lot of it will depend on cut, too. Some cuts appear larger. I have a 1/3 marquise, with a baguette on each side, bringing the TCW to 1/2. I wear size 7, so it might give you a little idea. However, I also like the petite, dainty look too. This is also pictured with the rose gold band we will be putting it with at the ceremony.

I'm not much help. My fingers are tiny. I wear a 4.5. My center stone is .62 but I have side channel set princess cut stones at .89 for a total of 1.51. I wanted tiny because my fingers are small. FH wanted at least a carat in the center and I put it on and it just didn't look right. Some people think it's about the side but I'm more for quality. I'd rather have a .5 of better quality than a carat of poor quality any day.

I would pick a sparkly beautiful (yet smaller) diamond over a bigger flawed diamond any day!!! Diamonds are supposed to shine and sparkle.. it sounds like you made the right decision IMO!

I seriously only have a 1/3 ct princess cut diamond solitaire. I would NEVER tell FH it's not big enough or ask to upgrade, he wants to upgrade but I'm fine with mine. ALL that matters to me is what the ring symbolizes.

My diamond is rated very high I guess which people comment all the time cuz it really does catch the light. It's only .77 but I do wear a 5.5 so it looks big. Hubby said he couldn't afford a whole carrot for the quality of diamond. It has 1 flaw somewhere but I don't see it. Now I'm glad it's smaller cuz actually it looks huge on me. But he picked it put and it's perfect for me
