Colored Vest with Tux?

sarah r, on February 22, 2013 at 7:40 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 25

We are having a formal black tie wedding. The guys will be wearing Vera Wang Black Slim Fit Tuxes. The man that helped us at Men's Warehouse thinks that there should be a navy blue vest and tie under the jacket to match the bridesmaid dresses. I personally don't like the vest a different color than the jacket, it looks to prom-like for me. The groom will be wearing an ivory vest and tie under his jacket, which I like. What have other people don't that have not matched the color of the vest to the bridesmaid dresses? I was thinking of a black vest, but then would having a blue tie look weird? Should I go all black?

The guys refuse to wear bow ties, because a few of them are self conscious about their lack of neck. I have attached a picture of the Vera Wang tux, my dress, and the bridesmaid dress. Thank you!

Hi! I actually had a question about tux/tie/vest colors yesterday! I am also having navy blue BM dresses (with fuschia accents) and I wondered about the best color for the GMs to wear! But someone posted some great picture inspirations on the post and this reminded me alittle of what you were saying with the black tux blue vest. Normally I like the vest matching the jacket also but this does look nice! Are you having any other colors? My guys are wearing navy blue and fuschia striped ties.

I didn't match the color of the vest to the MOH's dress. The BM had a black vest and a black tie, and my MOH wore a green dress. My H wore an ivory vest and tie, that was relatively close in color to my dress. So obviously I like that option :-)

Otherwise I don't think a blue tie is a bad idea, but I think this blue is too dark for a black suit.

Are there any other colors in your wedding (i.e. flowers, decor, etc)? I too, am not a fan of the matchy-matchy look. and I am wondering if you couldn't incorporate a bit of that color, and/or a pattern, into the ties as a compliment to the dresses, rather than trying to match them perfectly.

Our dresses are yellow. The groomsmen are wearing black CK tuxes with charcoal vests and yellow paisley ties. The paisley has subtle hints of darker yellows, grays and blues, but nothing over the top. Just enough to make the same yellow as the dress pop more, without matching perfectly. Their attire ends up looking more like a really expensive suit, rather than a tux. I love it. The ensemble we put together at the tuxedo place was something our salesperson said he had never seen or thought of, but that he would show it to customers. The people at rental places can help a lot with options, but honestly, (depending on where you go) they are not always the best person to make judgment about attire

The color of the bridesmaid dress is dark in that picture, the blue is lighter like the tux picture @jessicaD posted. I wanted to go with grey suits, but my FH said he wanted a black tux. It seems dark for a summer wedding, but I guess I have to let him have his way on a few wedding things! My other color is Nantucket Red. I attached a picture of a Nantucket Red tie that we are giving the groomsmen as one of their gifts (they all love fishing).

I never thought of putting a grey vest underneath. I will have to look into that!

I was going to suggest gray or a metallic.

I also think a colored vest under a tux reminds me of prom.

    Beautiful Dress!!!

I will be in all white, FH will be in ALL black from head to toe. Best man will be in all black with a silver vest/MOH will be in all black with silver shoes & some extra silver/sash on her dress. The rest of the groomsmen will be wearing all black with a white vest. The rest of my Bridesmaids are wearing black dresses, silver shoes

@Jessica D. I posted that picture and that's EXACTLY what our groomsmen are wearing. I bought the same exact tie and everything. I think the colored vest looks very nice and can look promish when you do the matching vest/tie combo but I never saw the look Jessica and I posted at any prom I went to.

Ughh! Men's Warehouse has created a uniform for men in weddings: A tux with a colored vest & tie that matches the BMs, and the groom in a whote/ivory vest and tie. It makes all weddings look the same. And some of the vest & tie sets are such a cheap satiny material that they look very clownish!

FH wanted to follow the standard MW uniform even though I am not the biggest fan. But I gave him final decision on menswear...

We are doing the same thing!! We are also doing a shade of blue for our girls. We decided to do a black tux, black vest, ivory shirt, black bow tie. It looks fine. You don't need that blue vest. We are also not doing a pocket scarf either. It looks better like this because it is all formal. Tell those guys whining about the bow tie to suck it up, it's your day!

If you are doing a black tie wedding I would stick with the classic tux with black tie an vest. I agree most of the time the colored vests look promish.

I don't see the top picture as a black tux.

Jessica d. picture looks more like a navy suit to me. I love that picture, it is one of the images I have saved to my computer to support a navy suit.

We are getting the same tux for our wedding and we opted for the black vest, colored bowtie and napkin. they didn't have any blue colors we liked so they are going to make the bowtie and napkin from the fabric of the girls dresses, $45. Groom is also going to have an ivory vest. dad's will be in all black vest bowtie and napkin.

A navy tie, navy napkin and black vest would go together very nicely. you could also bring in the navy into their boutonnieres.

My bridesmaids are wearing muted silver dresses, so the guys will be wearing a muted silver vest to match but their tie will be black and their bout will be red to match the bridesmaids' flowers. FH will wear a white bout to match me and my flowers, and so will my dad.

We are having the men not wear vests but a tie that matches the girls dresses. my fh will have his vest match his tux and then have an ivory tie and shirt.

Thank you for all the ideas. I just love the classic tux look and I really hate that MW tried to pressure you intonation they think looks good. It's true, they try to make everyone look cookie cutter. I am thinking I may just tell the boys to wear boy ties. I have let them have whatever they wanted so far, because I didn't want to be that bride, but I will be the one looking back at the pictures, not them!

We're using the same tuxes as you but in grey. The groomsmen's vests will match the suits but we're doing a red tie and red pocket square

I think it looks nice either way

I am doing black tie as well and not the matchy matchy thing that is so typical of the bridal party. I think for your summer wedding though that you probably should not do a vest at all- the guys tend to get really hot in all those layers (my fiance has been a groomsmen several times). As long as the boutonnieres match the bridemaid bouquets then I think that will be fine.

I don't think I would do the matchy matchy look with the vest. I have noticed of late that the colored vests seem too flashy. I think that a dark vest to compliment the tux would look great. We are going to do an all dark look since out wedding is in the evening. Where are the best tuxedos? It looks like JOS A Bank is a site sponser. My FH is particulr about quality. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My wedding is in June 1, so it could be really hot or chilly and it's an evening wedding starting at 6:00pm. I went to men's Warehouse for the tuxes, because they offer slim for now, which has a more tailored look. I also like that all the GM have been measured, but I can't still decide on the vest and tie option up until two weeks before the wedding. I didn't look at any other stores, so I cannot suggest any others.
