About

Where Taste meets Style!

Wendy Kromer Confections is a unique bakery & design studio.  We are devoted to creating exquisite wedding cakes, decorated cookies and edible wedding favors, using only the highest quality ingredients.

Since 1995, Wendy has produced many of the wedding cakes viewed in Martha Stewart Weddings magazine; as well as many of the decorated cookies, cakes & sugar related stories in Martha Stewart Living; Martha Stewart for Macy’s; various catalogs; and the Martha Stewart TV program.  Other books, magazines & TV programs include:  Baking with Julia; Colin Cowie Weddings; The Lake House Cookbook; In Style; People; Woman’s Day; Williams-Sonoma, and Oprah.

Upon earning her B. A. in Fashion Design & Merchandising (Notre Dame College of Ohio), Wendy moved to Paris, France to work as a fashion model.  After ten years of walking the runways of designers in Europe, Asia and U.S.,  Wendy moved to NYC and enrolled in the Professional Pastry & Baking program at Peter Kump School of Culinary Art (now known as the Institute of Culinary Education).  Shortly after, the Editors of Martha Stewart Living invited her to design a cake for their magazine.  Wendy continues her work with the company to this day, most recently co-authoring her first book,
Martha Stewart’s Wedding Cakes (Clarkson Potter, 2007).

Our mission at Wendy Kromer Confections is to work closely with clients to create the most perfect confection for their Wedding Day.

Frequently Asked Questions for Wedding Cake
Do you offer private tastings or open house tastings?
We encourage our clients to set up a private Tasting Appointment. At these appointments, couples have the opportunity to taste a wide variety of our cakes, fillings, and cake coverings; as well as view Wendy's extensive portfolio, and discuss the design for their Wedding Cake.

What are your tasting hours?
Tasting Hours are by appointment only.

Describe how you price, such as by slice or by tier, for your cakes?
Cakes are priced by the slice. There is a $6.00 minimum per person charge. Most cake prices range from $6.00 to $15.00 per person.

Does the price include the top tier of the cake?
Yes.

Do you offer custom cakes, or do you work with pre-designed styles?
We offer custom cakes, and will work with pre-designed styles.

What (if any) special ingredients, such as fresh fruits or farm-fresh butter, do you use in your cakes?
We work with fresh butter, eggs, heavy cream, European chocolate, fresh fruit purees & fruit preserves (made in our kitchens). Absolutely NO cake mixes....ever!

On average, how far in advance of the event do you prepare the cake?
Depending on the flavor of cake, our cake layers may be baked anywhere from 3-5 days before the Wedding Date. Some of our cakes (dark chocolate, spice) taste best when they have time to "cure".

How many cakes do you schedule for a typical weekend?
1 to 3

Will you work with the client's florist to garnish the cake?
Yes.

Do you offer delivery? If yes, how much is your average delivery fee?
We recommend we deliver the cakes. Currently delivery runs $45 per hour, and this is based on a round/trip from our studio in Sandusky, OH.

Tips and Advice

As a Wedding Cake designer for the past 14 years, I’ve gleaned a few tips that may prove helpful when shopping for your Wedding Cake.

-Depending on the Cake Designer/Bakery you hope to work with, it is best to get in their schedule as early as 1 year in advance.  So, as soon as you know you’d like to work with a specific Designer, book them!

-Set a budget for your Wedding Cake.  Like everything else in the Wedding, know what you would like to spend, on the Wedding Cake, before you visit Wedding Cake Designers/Bakeries.

-Start collecting photos of cakes you like.  If you find something that strikes your fancy, make a note as to what exactly you like about the cake.  For example:  is it the shape/height of the tiers; the way it’s stacked; the color; the decorations...

-If your budget is lower than the cost of the cake you have your heart set on, ask your Designer if they can work false tiers into the design, and put some of the servings into "sheet cakes" or "slicing tiers".  These tiers often cost much less than the servings that will be in the actual presentation cake, thus lowering your cost!

-Always consider the cake board or stand, that you would like your Cake to sit upon!   You may want to consider having a custom stand built to suit the design of the cake; or look for pretty pedestal cake stands.  If you have a vintage or heirloom silver stand in your family, perhaps that could work. Ask your baker what will the cake stand consist of.  If they say an "aluminum foil covered board", ask them to at least cover the top with fondant or royal icing, and trim the edge with a ribbon that matches your cake.  It is a sad sight, seeing beautifully crafted wedding cakes displayed on foil covered boards!

-For more tips, Martha Stewart and I have co-authored a  masterful book on this very subject!  Martha Stewart’s Wedding Cakes (Clarkson Potter) will assist you in How to Choose a Wedding Cake Designer; How to Select the Perfect Cake; What Types of Cakes, Fillings, Frostings, and Decorations, Designers are Working with Today; Recipes; as well as over 100 different cake styles to view!
