 Lately we’ve received a lot of questions regarding what couples should wear and where they should go for engagement sessions so I figure I’d share my thoughts with you. Check out the complete post on our blog: http://rayjoyce.com/blog/?p=65

1. Wear something you’re comfortable in

I’m all about pushing the limits when it comes to photography. Those of you whom I’ve asked to sit next to a dumpster or lie on the floor know what I’m talking about. However, even I would say there are limits when it comes to what clothes you wear during a shoot. If you’re a t-shirt and jeans kind of a gal, then it might not be such a great idea to push yourself into wearing something that’s not “you” just because it was on the cover of Elle last month. The bad thing is if you’re not comfortable, it shows. The good thing is if you are comfortable, it does wonders to the end results so just make sure you’re at ease with whatever you’re wearing and just…smile!



2. Consider two different outfits

Variety is like the spice of life so naturally two outfits are better than one. It brings a nice change to the pictures and gives you the chance to sneak in your favorite black top. Usually I suggest couples pick both a casual and semi-dressy set of outfits for the shoot. That way you won’t get a ton of photos all in the same tone.


3. Colors and patterns

If possible, try to stay away from anything that’s too distracting. Stripes, plaid, checkers, logos and words can be quite loud and takes away from the subjects. Solid colors are the best. Bright colors are awesome, but you might want to consider bringing a change of clothes to have something more mellow as well. Also, don’t forget to match with your fiance! Instead of wearing the same colors, consider wearing clothes with the same color palette or the same color in different hues so that you compliment each other well without being too matchy matchy.



4. Don’t forget about your shoes

Ah yes, the girls I’m sure will not forget this. Shoes can bring as much attention to the shot as your clothes so don’t forget to pick out something you love. Whether it be heels with jeans (which I adore) or a matching pair of chucks, shoes are big photo ops.



5. Pick locations that are meaningful to you

Did you meet your sweetheart in college? If so, a shoot in front of the library at your alma mater would be awesome. Are both of you avid golfers? We can certainly visit there to re-live, and re-enact, those moments! Another idea is just to think about what speaks more to you as a couple. Nature scenes like the beach or cityscapes with architecture in old town? Wherever it is you choose to have your engagement pictures taken, make sure you’ve given it some thought so that the places are meaningful to you.



6. It’s a date…really

This one is simple. Think of the few hours you’ll spend with each other (and us) as more of a date than anything else.



Sure we’ll do plenty of posed shots, but nothing beats having photos that are distinctly you. A shoot that oozes with personality is always our goal so don’t worry about being camera shy or nervous. We’ve worked with many couples and we always end up laughing and having a blast by the end. Cheers!
