With all of the information available on the internet today, what can I expect from a wedding planner that I can’t find online?
You can expect that a professional wedding planner will be an honest advocate, knowledgeable advisor, trusted friend and confidant. Yes, the internet is a wonderful resource; but it is not going to provide support and insight, and it certainly won’t be any help at all on your wedding day if something goes wrong. Remember: Nothing can take the place of a real person who truly cares about your wedding as much as you do.
What is the biggest reason a bride should have a wedding planner?
Communication. A seasoned wedding planner and bridal consultant is experienced in speaking the language of each vendor at your event, which enables them to ask the right questions, disseminate essential information to all involved persons, and understand how everything will come together (sound, lighting, décor, logistics, etc.). Your planner can also serve as the main point of contact for all vendors on the day of your wedding, effectively coordinating ‘the vendor team’ and handling situations on your behalf.
Are there certain designations or certifications I should ask for when interviewing a wedding coordinator?
While many qualified planners and coordinators are not certified by any organization or association, those that have earned the right to use “PBC” (Professional Bridal Consultant), “CWC” (Certified Wedding Consultant) or “CSEP” (Certified Special Events Professional) are often a step ahead. Certifications and designations are achieved only after completing an educational program and demonstrating proficiency (by exam and/or submitting a portfolio of work experience). Of course you should also consider (1) the coordinator’s level of experience (years in the industry) and (2) the coordinator’s professionalism (a responsible business owner for 3 or more years) in addition to any professional credentials.
How does a wedding coordinator stay on top of trends and trend forecasts?
Follow style through print media (fashion magazines, industry magazines, etc), attend conferences and trade shows, network with other talented professionals throughout the country.
