Zika virus limiting honeymoon plans

JerseyJess, on March 14, 2016 at 4:16 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 35

Does anyone have any suggestions for a tropical honeymoon destination that is Zika-free that doesn't take over a day to get to from FL? We would love to go to Bora Bora or the South Pacific, but it just isn't feasible for us with time off.

My FH and I want to start trying to conceive towards the end of the summer and now South, and Central America and the Caribbean is basically off limits to us because of this Zika virus. Does anyone have any suggestions for somewhat affordable, close, tropical spots?

I don't have any suggestions but I feel your worry with the Zika virus. FH and I are planning on trying to conceive right away and since we aren't taking our honeymoon until June we had to cancel our plan of a tropical destination in case I am already pregnant by the honeymoon. Good luck finding one!

I was worried about the same thing. We booked a Caribbean cruise right after our wedding, but we are not TTC until next year at some point. I was about to find a lot of info (or at least what they know know about Zika) on the CDC website, as well as this Yahoo article, but it still recommends talking to your doctor.

    https://www.yahoo.com/beauty/zika-virus-what-to-know-if-youre-trying-to-get-162001253.html

The good news: If you get bit by a Zika-infected mosquito and become pregnant a few weeks later, the virus won’t harm the unborn baby, the CDC says. “The virus appears in the blood stream, but it’s for a very short period of time” — about a week, per the CDC, explains Yvonne Maldonado, MD, chief of the division of pediatric infectious diseases at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and professor of pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. If you’re not pregnant when you get infected and then become pregnant weeks or months afterward, the virus will have already been cleared from your blood stream.

^^^That article looks like it came out before they found out Zika could be sexually transmitted.

ETA: OP make sure you talk to your doctor if you are planning to travel to an infected area and then TTC.

We're swapped our caribb plans for Hawaii ourselves since we'll be TTC and they say now the men might carry the disease for MONTHS. Ugh!

I really shouldn't have posted because I have no good suggestions other than the Keys. Tropical is hard right now, have you considered cruising up north instead? Some of those destinations are gorgeous--everyone I know that has gone to South Caroline looooved it, but it's not the first place anyone thinks of for travel. We figure we can go to the caribb next year.

Good catch Staci! I have an appt Friday with my doctor and want to discuss this more, I just with the doctors knew more! The unknowns about it are what are the scariest. I would be happy to update everyone with what I hear.

We are going to Jamaica for our honeymoon. I talked to the nurse about the Zika Virus when I called about travel vaccines, she said that we should take bug spray with us with at least 30-35% DEET. She also recommended waiting approximately a month from when we return to start trying to conceive.

From my understanding, the Zika Virus is most harmful to a fetus. Adults get flu like symptoms and a rash. So, as long as we don't conceive or try to conceive on the honeymoon we should be ok.

Zika is in Hawaii... and honestly it's probably everywhere but whether or not it has been detected is another situation. Mainly because it's transmittable. Just talk to your doctor! And call a local travel agent for their advice on places to go.

Trixie are you sure Zika is in Hawaii? It isn't on the CDC list.

^ Hawaii only has travel-related cases of Zika, same as most of the US. I've been keeping an eye on it since we're going to Hawaii in a few months.

We are also honeymooning in Hawaii so I was worried. Do you think it will spread there? We are going in July and we might cancel if we think it will be there then. Any opinions?

I haven't heard of any cases in Bermuda yet - I'm half Bermudian/half American and I regularly travel to the island to visit family. And it's not in the Caribbean as most people think. It's actually off the coast of the Carolinas a little more than 700 miles out in the Atlantic. Hotels can be a little pricey there, so I would look into renting suites on local property...like a B&B but without the breakfast...www.bermudagetaway.com is a good one, and www.awesomeviewbermuda.com. If those are out of your price range, Cruises seem to be pretty affordable. Good luck!!

Anyone know if it is in the bahamas? We aren't going there for our honeymoon but will be next January for a cruise.

I don't see it spreading to Hawaii. A mosquito or its larvae would have to get on some kind of vehicle from the infected areas and last the trip to Hawaii and then mate with the same type of mosquito there (only certain types of mosquitoes can carry the virus). It just seems pretty far fetched.

If you do go tropical, my doctor stated to wear Insect Repellent with DEET. Any of the all natural insect repellent is not strong enough to prevent mosquito bites. I know DEET is unpopular but I'd use it now instead of getting bitten and potentially contracting Zika.

The Mediterranean! From the east coast it's 6-8 hours to some lovely warm places with beaches in Spain, Italy and Greece. Morocco is also gorgeous.

Thanks everyone! My FH and I are pretty well traveled so we are looking to travel somewhere neither of us have been. I'll check out some of your suggestions and if I hear anything further about Zika I'll update my post! I'm an ER nurse so I'll ask around at work too :-)
