You're making how much money off of me?

FutureMrsC, on December 8, 2014 at 10:53 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

So I asked for pricing information from a wedding venue that I had visited when they were still under construction. They sent me this regarding a daytime wedding. I mean I'm all for making a profit but damn, more than 50%?!!! Geez, greedy much?

I can't even see that, but in my experience, 50% isn't really on the high end of profit these days. They'd be doing good if they doubled their profit for each service/item.

I can't read the picture lol. It's so tiny. Can you elaborate on what's upsetting you?

Can't begin to read that small print.

Insurance, utilities, payroll, property taxes, payroll taxes, upkeep of building & grounds & furnishings, advertising -- it all adds up.

I just find it tacky that they would send me how much its costs them, how much they are charging me and how much of a profit they're making.

The print is too small too read, but I'm guessing it's an excel spreadsheet with their profit margin on it? They must have sent that on accident...if they sent that intentionally, then they don't know how to run a business and I would be wary of contracting with them.

I agree, 50% seems really high, but when you consider the industry it's probably about right. Business only charge as much as people are willing to pay. And in the wedding industry, people are willing to pay a lot. If you didn't know the profit margin, would you find the price unreasonable? Probably not.

They are providing services in exchange for money, like every other business in America. You buy wine? Do you know the markup for that?? A business has a right to charge whatever they want as long as people are willing to pay for it. I am shocked though that they shared that much info with you, I have never seen that before, I doubt they were supposed to do that. It sure could give you some leverage on negotiating though

This situation is atypical in a few ways: it is not normal for a venue to send you their entire price breakdown when you ask for a pricing request. Perhaps they sent you the wrong document. They really should have just sent a sheet listing the "cost to bride" column along with what these costs include.

That being said, the 50% profit is actually also pretty atypical. Some venues can get up to 75% profit, and this is the profit that most restaurants make on food that they serve.

While I don't find the cost / inflation to be greedy or too much, I do think it's tacky and ridiculous they would send that information to you.

Yeah that is really weird that they told you the profit lol.

It is what it is, you know? It costs a lot to insure, heat, a/c, light, maintain a place, let alone overhead on employees (like benefits). Then you include stuff like marketing, liquor licenses, management, etc. In my industry, the cost of the material and the employee is only about 1/3 the total cost to the customer.

Someone sent you the wrong thing, but it's not all that surprising.....% wise.

They totally shouldn't have sent you this type of detail, its probably for internal eyes only but maybe its all they had. lazy, they shouldve edited out profit and just given you pricing.

But it is their business. 50% margins, DJ, linens, cleaning, serving staff, regular staff and food, is average.

Well, now that you have their bottom line, time to start negotiating! FH owns a restaurant, and I can guarantee you, there is NO way we would ever send our profit margins to someone looking to rent out our facility. Use this mistake to your advantage!

And as I have said before, who wants to get into the wedding business and make tons of money, once we are all done planning our own!
