Your thoughts on bridal showers

I'm just curious what you all think because this is my opinion. I just received an invite for a bridal shower for a girl who has lived with her FS for a couple years now. I didn't do a bridal shower, because personally I think it's rude to ask people to buy me stuff when I've already been living...

I didn't do a bridal shower, because personally I think it's rude to ask people to buy me stuff when I've already been living with my DS 2 years before we were married. Do you think it's rude to have a bridal shower when you've been living with someone for awhile? I thought the intended purpose of this was to buy the couple things they would need for their new home together?

@Kathy-I think themed showers are great. I would be much more conducive to buying something for someone with that idea in mind!

You can have a shower with activites and games, I dont think its all about the gifts. My cousin had a chef come and teach us all how to make souflee and chocolate covered strawberries...Also, for our wedding we are going to put on our wedding website "Your presence in our lives is gift enough, but for those of you who requested it, here is a link to our registry."

I bought my own house approximately 3 years ago, and my fiance also bought his house about 3 years ago........We are both 33. I look at it as, I worked hard all of these years to establish myself and over the years i've bought many gifts for others- and my parents have bought gifts for all showers that have gone on in our family. Why because i'm 33, and I have a house should I not be entitled to some type of gift because i'm late in life at finding love? I don't believe in having the multiple showers that I see people having (honey-do, lingerie, couple's) I would prefer cash money but there are some things that I can always use and definitely some items can use an upgrade.

I don't see it as rude at all! Sure, lots of couples have lived together, or apart for many years, and they have house stuff, but ALOT of that stuff gets used up or badly needs replacing, or if anyone is like me, I have lived on my own for awhile, FS and I have lived together for 4 years, he had not a single house thing when we moved it, so it's all mine, and getting very worn out! And it was nice to get new stuff, stuff that is 'ours' not 'his' or 'mine', it's 'our' stuff!

I dont think its rude. I kind of wish that we would of had one, but because my sister said theyre boring, we didnt do one. It sounds like something fun and kind of just a time for family and friends to get to know each other before the wedding and since our families hardly know each other, I really wish we would of had one.

I think it's completely situational but the amount of time they've lived together shouldn't dictate whether or not they have a shower. If you have purchased a house and live together, it doesn't mean you have everything you need. Thanh and I have everything we "need" but there are still a lot of things we'd like to have--- like nicer towels, new toaster, mixing bowls, new pots/pans etc. We can buy all of that and plan on it eventually-- but if family/friends want to help that's great too. Smiley smile

We aren't having a shower at my request. I just don't like all that attention and I feel like most of the people I would want to attend live all the way in Ohio..way too far from me.

Not a fan personally. Now I've been to a handful and participated in the games but I really don't want my guests coming out of pocket to buy me something and to turn around in a few months and buy me more things.

Even a couple that has lived together for a while may need household goods. For example, if they have been managing with thrift shop stuff or doing without because they don't have the money for more, why shouldn't they have a shower?

I have refused to have a shower at either of my weddings, but for completely different reasons. First off, it seems sexist to me. The bride gets a shower, and only women are invited? What sense does that make?

Second, the idea of a party in which I have to produce realistic enthusiasm for the fourth toaster strikes me as a special kind of hell.
