Youngest Maid of Honor

How old is/was your maid of honor? My sister will be 16 by the time I get married and I'm not sure how I feel about her age as a maid of honor :/

I’m not understanding why your sister’s age is bothering you.

I guess I feel like the maid of honor is supposed to help you with planning and everything & I feel like she's not mature enough for that. Idk

Do you mean about doing the speech planning the parties? If you do not think she can do it you can have two maids of honors. If you want that stuff done.

19 when I asked, 21 when I got married. We're seven years apart, but I always knew if I were to get married, it would be her because she's my best friend. I didn't really ask anything of my bridal party, but there were times she felt they were trying to boss her around or take charge. But she did great, and I made sure I stood up for her

My sister will be 20 by the time I am married but I am not asking her to be my MOH just because I feel the role will be too stressful for her. Instead I am asking her to sing a song as We enter and leave the ceremony. I also asked her to make a special speech.

My sister will be 17 by the time I get married and I still haven’t asked her. As someone pointed out, her age makes me feel like she’s not going to be able to plan anything, maybe due to initiative or simply because she just doesn’t. I dkn. I do know that she had to be the one.

She’s not. Hopefully changing your expectations will change your feelings on her age. My MOH will be 19 come wedding time and definitely isn’t responsible enough to plan, or even help plan, a wedding. Good thing it’s not her responsibility!

So if you are going to potentially have your sister as the moh. Who is going to sign the marriage license? She won't be able to do so, you have to be at least 18.

Usually BM under 18, or a second MOH so I did not sign wedding papers as a witness, I was in 4 weddings when I was 14-17 and only helped plan showers, addressed envelopes of invitations ( neat handwriting and calligraphy) and of thank you notes, and typed in all guest names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses to make a master spread sheet of guest lists , because I had desktop PC with good computer skills when brides then barely computer literate. I also did minor alterations for all BP and brides, like hemming dresses, hemming slips or petticoats, for shower, bridal luncheons, and rehearsal dinner wear. So I never overall planned anything independently. But someone has to help if not plan little things, and little stuff like putting stamps on all invitations, rsvp envelopes, and boxes of thank you card envelopes . I felt happy and useful in weddings as a teen, but never more responsibility than a 14-17 could handle. I drank soda at events with alcohol. No parties were late at night ( Bach parties ended by midnight.). . Four of my sisters had a cousin or one sister 14-17 as one MOH or 1 bridesmaid, because they married under 21 and were closer to younger relatives. I was older at my wedding, no young people in BP. Just have a second Maid of Honor, or a Matron of Honor, for any MOH under 18 or in high school. Lots of things they can do that are genuinely useful, and decision making or more skilled planning done mostly by B & G, or other MOH or Best Man or older BM. The main difference between BM and MOH is not what they do. It is that MOH is usually the one whom bride has known longer, or feels closer to than other friends or family. Lots of brides I know have a younger family member, or even someone they babysat or were a Godmother to, or coach for. And when a teen is chosen by an older person they adore, it is very special to that teen. So, why not?

I would not ask any teen going through a pouty, "why do I have to do anything I don't want to " stage, who will be a general pain in the neck. But then, I would not want a self involved person age 18-35 with a sense of entitlement and Big Ego to feed, more of a problem than someone young in a bridal party.

My sister is 15 and I just had her as a bridesmaid. I sat down and explained that there are financial commitments and planning that just are a lot to put on someone her age and that I was her to focus on school and soccer. She was also pleased because she has a different bouquet slightly and other areas where she is recognized as special.

And to add, I’m not having the pre-wedding events, such as bridal shower or bachelorette party. I’m not asking or insisting she be a part of any planning, just to give her a special title in my special day is all that I want for her.

Our youngest doaughter will have just turned 14 when she is MOH at her sisters wedding in a few weeks. She didn’t go to bachelorette weekend which was fine she helped me with the shower. She is excited to give a speech. 😊 there are no financial things that Addie is responsible for.

Mine will be 22 and in our tradition we don't make the MOH responsible for anything, so the age don't matter for us.

My sister in law is my maid of honor and will be 18 when I get married. My other bridesmaids were happy to take on the planning responsibilities so that she isnt overwhelmed or confused about what to do. Sge will be signed our marriage license and helping pick out dresses and such!

My sister is also my MOH but she is over 21. I think in this case, having a second MOH that is older (above 21 i think) would be more appropriate to help with responsibilities. Your sister's input should be just as important as the other girls, but keep in mind that she'll still be in school, have other responsibilities and may not be able to take part in some bachelorette festivities that she'd be planning alone if she was a solo MOH

The MOH isn't really responsible for helping you with planning, anyway. While my MOH was older, she lives across the country. I was just happy to have her stand up for me at the wedding.

This. She doesn't help you plan your wedding. Your FI does that. If you need more help, you hire someone.

My girls were 31 and 26. My best friends.
