WWII themed wedding

samantha, on September 3, 2012 at 6:08 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

Hi everyone! so my fiance and is Kyle is a marine and i'm so excited about some options that opens up for the wedding with uniforms and ceremonies. I'm a huge history buff and my favorite time period is the 1940s and 50s so naturally i wanted to do a WWII themed wedding. The problem is im having some issues thinking of a place to have the ceremony in or close to San Diego. It doesnt have to be at the same location but it deffinately needs to be close. Ive always adored those really old pictures of a sailors homecomming and i think trying to recreate something like that would be fantastic because Kyle happens to be returning from deployment right before the wedding. Im not limited to somehting like that but I really need some help with the venue on this one.. so any ideas??

OMG what an awesome idea! San Diego is loaded with this type of stuff and places to hold something like this. I'm not totally into the Marines/Navy/Army stuff but I know if you google "WWII sites San Diego" I'm sure you can come up with something. The only thing I'm coming up with is Miramar which is in San Diego and is Marines, so take it from there.

If you want WWII themed - why not get married at the Chapel on the base?

I would go for any venue that meets your budget/wedding guest size and set up a nautical theme. That plus vintage would be a very good place to start. San Diego should have some venues overlooking the water, no?

IDK, war isn't really the best theme for a wedding.....why not just do a 40s theme? Believe me, after a little while stuff like that or people using dog tags as accessories will make you cringe a little. I'd also talk to any of his buddies who are also military or even just guests who are military first, because some don't like wearing their uniforms if they don't have to, and others dislike people treating the uniform like a costume.

Edited to add that I didn't mean for that to come off rude or anything, and if you really really want to it's none of my business. If you go the 40s route, check out The Lafayette. http://lafayettehotelsd.com/meet-gather/weddings

Ok, wayyyy too much wedding wire. When I first saw this title I asked myself "what is wedding wire II". Smh @ self. So now that I understand the concept, is there a base or shipyard where you can perhaps hold the reception and decorate to suit your purpose? Perhaps maybe a yacht dinner cruise type of venue that you can decorate or dress up to look like the time period. Not sure but just a couple of ideas.

Aw I love that! Love the 40s style. Lots of great music... tons of stuff. Great get up, etc etc.... what about a plane hangar thing!? or just a nice venue. I wouldn't go over board with military stuff personally... but his duds can be retro, just like your dress and hair. The dinner music, the atmosphere....

here the first few pics are of the same thing.. sublte touches... http://blog.collages.net/2009/08/17/website-of-the-week-august-17-2009/

Well im not really sure if or how i can reply to specific comments but thank you guys for responding.

Kimm: theres two bases mirimar and pendelton but hes stationed at mirimar. as for the chapel.. niether of us really care to get married in a church it has no significance for ether of us since niether of us are extremely religious.

Pan: Well the aspect of the war is the celebration of homecomming not the war itself and ive always adored the old picture of the sailors and their girls. pLus war always facinates me lol ancienty weaponry, military in general really. and as for the uniforms no one is treating it like a costume everyone in uiform has their choice to wear it and are actuall military its not a costume its a privilage. and its jsut seting the wedding in a different time period not making it cutesy and laughable. Its more showing the bonds of love throughout time and how stong a persons love is to make it through a deployment its significant because it shows devotion

Rowena: the only thing about actually having it on base is getting all the guests cleared to be on base its much too complicated every person even childeren need to have an id theres car searches etc... plus we have to get special permission for pictures in certain places on base and its basically jsut a bunch of stress that i dont want to have to deal with.

As for clothing and such ive got all of that covered i just need a specific vene to look at or venue idea. things due to the time period are easy for me as well as clothing seeing as im a theater major and know how to make the things myself if need be i know whaat i need i just cant think of a creative venue.

Sabrina: thanx and its not really focused on the military jsut certain ceremonies like the arch of sabers and the cake cutting plus he gets to loo all spiffy in his uniform haha And ive thought about the airplane hangar thing i jsut dont kow where to but i think it would be perfect for combining what he does and what i lov

What about a pier? out on the water or a naval museum that's maybe got boats on the water or has boats displayed? I'm from the east coast so don't know much about your options in san diego.

I can't be of any help regarding location but I kinda agree with Pan. Anything war sounds harsh. However, I understand how you meant it. I would just call it homecoming theme or something and leave war out. Not judging or trying to be harsh, just a thought. Smiley smile

Its not like we're calling it anything specific that was jsut how to explain it its not like we're putting the theme name on the invitations
