Writing your own vows

H, on August 16, 2019 at 8:35 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 2 13
This is probably going to sound silly and a little vague, but where do you begin on writing your own vows? I don't want to read example vows because then I feel like I would end up writing something similar subconsciously and I really want it to be truly authentic and meaningful specifically to my FH.

When it came to writing vows for my wedding I kept looking at her picture and thinking of all the reasons I was so excited to marry her. I then thought about our relationship, all those moments that only we share. There are things most people promise, love, honor, support, but each couple is unique. In the end, I mentioned how important our story is to me, how we met and eventually fell in love. Then I promised her the things that anyone would promise as well as those things that will only ever be for her. Those moments only we share are the reasons I would marry her every day.

And that's enough sap for now. I'm sure you will come up with something beautiful. Good luck!

I looked at a TON of examples and picked from diff ones, then changed them up to be my own words and I tweaked it. Honestly, pinterest helped a lot!

I've been jotting down things here and there when I think of it. I would say just sit and think about the things you love most about your fiancee and start there. You can mention special little things he does for you, or special memories you wouldn't mind sharing. You can tell him what you see for you two in the coming years

If you are struggling with structure, I think it’s possible to look at examples and still have the final result be authentically yours. However, if you really don’t want to start there I would begin by just putting down you thoughts. What are things you currently do with or for your partner that you want to continue? What elements of your relationship do you want to maintain or improve on? Sometime it’s easier to just start sitting and see what come out then go back and edit. If you want your vows to sound similar to each other, just make sure you share your structure. I wrote mine first, so when I was happy with them I told him I had two sentences on how I knew I loved him, x number of promises, x number of funny promises followed by x many more promises. Out vows turned out very balanced to each other but still completely different and reflective of the writer.

Writing your own vows is intimidating. But think about why you’re getting married (when did you fall in love, what do you love about your FS, when did you know FS was the one) and what you’re promising your spouse. Then just write.

Oh wow that was really helpful to me! Mine were almost the exact format but I forgot to include a favorite quote, now I love my vows because they look more polished.

I am currently struggling with this also! I just started today. I have looked at a few examples and have a couple lines down, but Im not sure how to transition from one thought to the next. My wedding is about 2 1/2 weeks away!! It snuck up on me a little, but I'm a bit of a procrastinator too lol.

My fh and I decided we would both start with I ___ take you ___ to be my ____ and we also decided on a word count of 250-300 words.
