Wrinkled Dress

Lynda, on July 29, 2012 at 11:04 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

I bought my dress from David's Bridal and they offer a complmentary steaming to get wrinkles out before the wedding. I live over an hour from the shop, so it costs gas money to go back and forth twice. I am wondering if anyone has paid to have this done or knows approx. how much it would be. I have read you can do this at home as well but not sure I can.

Why should it be wrinkled to begin with?

I'd check with your venue; many of them have steamers on site and the coordinator will help you with that, but they should be very minor.

Can you get it done at the a DB's closer to you? Also, I would not do this myself. I would definitely have it professionally done. The last thing you want is to walk down the aisle with a burn mark on your dress or yellowing from improper steaming.

There is none closer. I live in a rural area. This was the closest one.

I would go for it, or find a professional near you who offers this service also. If it has been wrinkled (or the veil) you want it to be steamed out. I would be too scared to do this on my own.

Then look into your venue. If they don't provide this service, then DB is your only other option. Sorry.

If you're going to be driving a hundred miles with this baby, it's going to get wrinkled again, won't it? If they're going to pack it in tissue, they should have done that the first time.

This makes no sense to me.

Mine was wrinkled as well Smiley sad im having the SAME problem! I bought my dress from David's bridal I picked it up, poor service they just wanted me in and out basically; I wanted to try it on make sure it fit they dress was badly wrinkled. I took it anyway and went home. I live almost an hour away from the shop. I need alterations and stuff done as well I just don't know who to trust because I'm not from around here and i dont know anyone who does that type of work nor have I seen anyone. Plus my venue is another hour away from where I live so I don't know if I should get it done in my area. So I'm right there with you.

Wow, this is not good service at all.

For now, I would simply hang it in its garment bag from the highest and safest place inside your house.

Before your wedding, if you can't find a seamstress/dry cleaner willing to press/steam it, I would suggest doing the shower method. Hang your dress in the bathroom with the shower running at the highest level. When you are finished, hang it at the highest place in your house. Spread out your train, but keep the dress part in the bag.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the insight. I am probably going to have a friend house since FH doesn't want to see it until the day, that may let some of the wrinkles fall out. Celia, that makes sense about the drive putting wrinkles in again as well.

I was told after having my steamed to make sure it is hanging up and not in a garment bag..so its definitely something you want to do within a couple days of the wedding..depending on the material..mine is taffeta, which wrinkles very easy. If i were you I would call around local alteration places in your area, it may cost even less in gas money to just have it done by you and pay, usually doesn't cost more than like $40 depending on the area you live in.

I followed this post with interest as I have basically the same problem. I ordered my satin dress online through DB, and though packed in tissue, it's quite wrinkled. I, too, live in a rural area an hour away from DB, and though they will steam it for free, the directions say the dress must be UNALTERED--sneaky, huh? My neighbor is an incredible seamstress who has altered many a wedding dress and is doing mine for free as a gift, so now DB won't steam it. I'll start by hanging it in a garmet bag. Then I'll check with cleaners or alterations shop to see if I could have steaming done locally.

Wow thanks for that I didn't know about the alterations. Thankfully I don't need them. They tried to get me to have some done. When I started crying they threw shoes on me and viola problem solved. Slick DB.

Don't get me started on DB.....buying the dress was great. Customer service afterwards has been HORRIBLE.
