Our baker doesn't give lend out her cake stands and so we either a) have to rent one ourselves; or b) have to buy one; or c) make one. Since we're on a very limited budget, I would prefer to go the cheapest route. Our cake will be 4-tiers but I have to get more information on how big the bottom tier will be. I may have to give up my dream cake to save about $100-200 (I'm considering it) and at this case, the cake would be only 3-tiers. Anyway, any suggestions? Anyone DIY? Ideas?

The candles are battery operated, not real Smiley tongue

I wouldn't put real candles under there as I would be afraid that the cake would melt!!

Thanks for the posting directions, but pics I found searching the internet are saved on a Word Document, how do I post those.

BTW..I am so glad someone posted this topic. I like the plexiglass idea much better than my own. Thanks!

The square votive holders are at the dollar tree, they are heavy duty- they were perfect!

As I stated above: Just a note- plexi-glass I wouldn't recommend- it was more expensive than reg glass and very cloudy. I used a 20inch round by 1/4 inch thick glass. I used 9 votives to hold up the 20inch round glass

Very cute Mrs. Jacques. My baker actually told me that if I have access to a glass crate that they use in restaurants to use that. She said turn it upside down, put a towel over it and then your fabric.

Just be careful with the plexiglass. take your time if you are attaching pieces and secure everything for at least 24 hours before touching it again!

There was no need to secure the votives to the plexiglass- the weight of the cake was plenty to hold it in place. Our stand was put together just by placing the votive holders down in the center of the glass (we put LED tealights in the holders and red diamond confetti). Then the cakes on top of it. The cake was very secure and we had no worries on it being stable. My only recommendation is using very think votive holders to support the weight. I used the square votive holders I posted above. Good Luck let me know if you have any more questions. Everyone loved our cake stand, my Mum made the cake Smiley smile

Another way is if you have a wood worker in teh family is get nice 4 inch molding and a piece of nicer plywood and make a square stand yourself. Simple box shape and then you could paint or finish it naturally.

My friends and I actually purchased our wedding cake stands from a woman who makes beautiful cake stands with removable cake skirts. Seems that most bakers only provide those boring looking plain cake rounds to display your cake...why spend so much money on a gorgeous cake to just put it on a dull piece of cardboard? You can buy the stand kit I think it's called and it comes with a stand, a cake skirt and matching flower and ribbon for only $65!!! She has a good selection of fabric skirts and crystal ones too. The best thing about this cake stand is you can change the skirt over and over to match every event! This is the stand I purchased. Check her out on cakedress.com!
