[WR]: DIY Cake Stand Ideas (Vendors Welcome)

♥ Elizabeth Nicole ♥, on October 5, 2010 at 11:28 AM Posted in Planning 0 30

Our baker doesn't give lend out her cake stands and so we either a) have to rent one ourselves; or b) have to buy one; or c) make one. Since we're on a very limited budget, I would prefer to go the cheapest route. Our cake will be 4-tiers but I have to get more information on how big the bottom tier will be. I may have to give up my dream cake to save about $100-200 (I'm considering it) and at this case, the cake would be only 3-tiers. Anyway, any suggestions? Anyone DIY? Ideas?

Renting might still be the cheapest route...I would call around to event rental places near you. Why doesn't she rent them out herself?

Some of them she never got back. And I'm sure you know how expensive it is to buy them outright to replace them? They can be a pretty hefty price... even when a bride or another person signed a contract and was supposed to get them back, she never did. Smiley sad

Darn you girls! I am trying to stay on budget and keep my to do list down to a minimum as well as my diy list but now I not only want a wishing tree but also a plexiglass cake stand with candles underneath. Stop posting cute ideas until after Brittani's wedding!!! You girls are killing me and my wallet!!!

We are having the same trouble finding a cake stand we like, and that is affordable. We saw a an ivory colored cake stand at AC Moore in Delaware for $20. It had a 12" circumference and the base was about 4-5 inches high. For some reason, I can't copy and past the picture. It is not a jpg. Also,AC Moore often offers 50% off coupons, and will match Michaels or Joanne's competitors coupons. This is what it looked like:

This one also comes in 14" high

This is my favorite. I am hoping it comes in 14".

    http://www.jafgifts.com/GOLD-BAROQUE-13-D-CAKE-PLATE_139249.html 3/14 inches high $29.99

There is also a site that has handmade wooden stands, but google is being sensitive right now.

I wish I could post the pics, but I dont know how to copy off my Word Document.

Also...WIlliams Sonoma and Pottery Barn have them.

Lowes, and they will cut to the size you need for free. My FH is building our cupcake stand and we were just there looking.

I've seen ones where they use the glass blocks for the cake stand and they look awesome!

Can't seem to find one right now. This one with the mirror looks pretty cool too! I bet you could find some mirror plexiglass at maybe Lowe's and some MDF board to make it

WIlliam Sonoma has stands as tall as 4 inches...here is a link: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/7007008/?catalogId=4&bnrid=3120901&cm_ven=GoogleProdAds&cm_cat=ProductAds&cm_pla=DataFeed&cm_ite=General

This site offers plateaus and scrolls. The plateaus are pricey, but gorgeous: http://www.weddingcakestand.net/ I think some of the wooden stands can be duplicated, if you know of someone good with wood.

Good luck...as for us, we have to wait to see how big the wedding topper is. I want our topper on the bottom tier...yes, I know...weird sounding.

    Good luck

This is what I did.The pics do not do it justice, it was glowing like in the inspiration pic... last picture is my inspiration picture Smiley smile

Just a note- plexi-glass I wouldn't recommend- it was more expensive than reg glass and very cloudy. I used a 20inch round by 1/4 inch thick glass.

Ladies....I love the plexiglass idea. I think I am going to have to borrow it. Thanks! It looks much better than my ivory ceramic stands!

Your baker could charge a deposit large enough to buy a new stand if the couple doesn't return the stand.

Rental places have a variety of stands.

I actually like the plexiglass or glass idea better than the regular ole cake stands. It's prettier to me Smiley smile More of the look I'm going for!! Thanks ladies. Definitely going to look into the plexiglass vs. regular glass and look for the square candle holders Smiley smile Smiley smile Smiley smile

The candles IMO would be the battery operated tea lights.
