Would you do a Signature Drink if it cost this much?

Happy In Hawaii, on January 9, 2015 at 8:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

Originally we wanted to do signature drinks. We wanted Mai Tais and Blue Hawaiians which both fit our colors and our tropical Hawaiian theme. However, during cocktail hour we get a free open bar (included in our package) but the signature drinks would still cost extra. Then after dinner we plan to have the bar open with beer and wine options and we're paying by consumption (our guests aren't heavy drinkers in general, they can pay if they want hard alcohol after dinner but we will cover beer and wine, this is common in my family for weddings). I thought the signature cocktails might be nice to have either after dinner or during cocktail hour. However the drinks will cost $11 for mai tais and $13 for blue hawaiians...each!

So do you think that adding the signature drinks is necessary? Would it be worth that cost? If you were at a wedding with free beer and wine, would you go for that or the signature cocktail? Just wanting opinions on it, thanks!

While that's about par for cocktails in NY, I don't think it's really necessary. Would you have to provide them for everyone? I was at a wedding recently where they passed trays of a sig drink, and when they were done, they were done; they were small too; little snifter glasses. They were really cute!

I don't think I would for that price. The beer and wine would be fine for me.

In case you aren't familiar with what is in those drinks, here are the ingredients:

Mai Tais: white rum, dark rum, orange curaçao, Orgeat syrup, fresh lime juice

Blue Hawaiians: light rum, vodka, Curaçao, pineapple juice, unsweetened, Sweet and Sour

    And some pictures for ya!

If I didn't have to pay for it I probably would. I like mixed drinks more than beer or wine. Those are pretty pricey though.

Beer and wine's good for me! You're giving me free alcohol. That alone makes me happy.

@Celia, yeah it's expensive in southern california too, the wine we're paying for is already $9 a glass and beer is $8 per beer. So it makes sense, I'm just trying to see if people really think it would be necessary. We would not be giving one to everyone, it would just be that people could order it at the bar if they wanted. I'm afraid some people would just order a ton the whole night and it would get really expensive.

ETA: Celia, that's a good idea, I should ask them about smaller size versions!

If you are already having an open bar for cocktail hour, then the signature drinks are definitely a "nice to have" and not a "have to have".

If you assume that the signature drinks have standard ingredients from the bar, what would be the cost per drink (use the cash bar numbers to estimate.) I will bet money that it is lower than what they want to charge for the "signature" drink. The only way to justify the extra cost would be if they need to bring in ingredients and glassware that they do not normally use as part of a standard bar set-up...

Regardless, if you really, really want it and can work it into the budget, then go for it. If it is not in the budget, this is not something I (personally) would chose to go over budget to have.

I think the signature drinks would be a great addition to any wedding. However, that price is a little steep. If you have room for it in your budget, I'd do it. If not, it's not the end of the world. Your still supplying your guests with more than enough alcohol.

Yikes, that's way too much. I wouldn't do it - I don't think its worth it! Plus people are more likely to order the signature drink when there is one. Maybe buy some cute little umbrellas for the bartenders to put in everyone's drink instead lol.

Personally I would do it. As a guest, I would really appreciate a cocktail option rather than just beer and wine. And you may not have that many of them ordered anyway.

The only reason why we're doing a sig drink is we must spend a min. for food/bev for our venue (not including ceremony fee), since we're having outside catering so our "package" is less expensive, we needed something to get us to the minimum...so sig drink it is!!! I think its better than an open bar (which isn't included with our package..sad face).

We're doing similar to you on the alcohol during dinner. We will provide wine (bringing our own), and if they want hard liquor there will be a cash bar, I don't care if anyone on WW thinks its tacky.

Oh wait, if they can already get hosted cocktails during cocktail hour, then I wouldn't worry about the sig drinks. I would get a Cosmo and be happy.

If the options are free beer/wine or an $11 or $13 drink, I would stick with beer/wine personally. If the drinks were less I would go with a couple drinks. When people have a cash bar around here drinks are usually $5-7/each, but I can see that that clearly depends on the region.

Yeah people can have their mixed drinks during the cocktail hour since that whole time the hard alcohol will be included. Also I'm not sure if it was clear...but we would be the ones paying for the signature drinks (not our guests) but that's why I'm thinking $11-$13 is more than I want to spend. I'm glad most people would be happy with getting their mixed drink during cocktail hour and that beer and wine would be enough. We're also serving wine throughout dinner and doing champagne toasts.

I'm a little sad to cut it out, I even had the cheesiest names:

Mai Tai the knot and Something Blue Hawaiian

Oh well...at least I hadn't made signs for them yet!

@songbird, I really don't know why they're charging such a high cost, it doesn't seem like it should be that much, you're probably right that the garnish or drink glasses might be different.

@annakay We are doing cocktail umbrellas as part of our escort cards at least haha!

To add a sig drink at our venue will be $10 per person, so I feel your pain lol. We're debating it but we really like the idea of a personalized drink that reflects us.

I would skip the signature drink. I think a lot of people would order that over the wine and beer.
