Would no linens be too tacky?

Kristin, on June 7, 2012 at 12:32 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

We are looking at a venue that charges a large amount for linens. Would it be too tacky to not have them and possibly substitute an alternative, cheaper table decoration to make it look a bit more classy? Our wedding is going to have a very informal feeling, but I don't want it to be extremely tacky.

Advice and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

How much are they charging? I found I could buy linens online for about 30-50% cheaper then they wanted to rent. I know there is one person on here who went that route and was un-happy because of the time it took to get the wrinkles out, but I think it's worth it for the savings.

Yeah, I'm buying linens too, cheaper than renting, but I only need 8 of them.

That's a good point. They are charging $300. Is that reasonable? I don't know the market price or anything, but I can't imagine paying that much for linens. We will only have 40-50 guests, so about 5-7 tables.

Holy crap that is expensive! we have 100 people (10-12 tables) and we bought them all for like $180. Actually I bought mine used from someone so there are 20, plus some square ones. But it was about the same price as the new ones. Check out...

they all are close to the same price, just depends on who is having a sale, what colors you want, etc.

Shellie: Thanks for links! I definitely don't want to pay $300 if I can buy them for cheaper!

Can you bring in something from an outside vendor?

We are just doing table runners, nothing else, but our venue has beautiful hand made wooden tables. The owners and their sons cut the trees, shape, sand, stain, and gloss them all by hand. The legs are all made by hand also.

We bought ours, too. Not only was it less expensive than renting, but linens were among the easiest thing to resell after the wedding. And unlike with some other items (dresses being the most obvious), the amount we could sell them for wasn't much less than the amount we bought them for.

All that being said, whether linens are important depends on a) how nice the tables are, and b) the formality of the rest of the wedding.

That's crazy! I'm with the rest of the girls, if you decide to go with linens, look into renting them or something if you can bring them in from an outside source.

As far as would it be "tacky" to not have them, I think it just depends on what YOU want, and what the look of your wedding is. If you have a small, casual reception, maybe linens are necessary. If you have a formal wedding with beautiful centerpieces, etc, then I'm thinking you would want the linens.

Ultimately, it's what you both like Smiley smile

I agree with other posters...the tackiness would depend on how the tables look.

I think buying tablecloths for 5-7 tables should be relatively inexpensive.

I found this site: that is SUPER inexpensive for both tablecloths and chair covers.

    Thanks for all the responses!

The wedding will definitely be casual. I'm wearing a short dress, and our "WP" is only the MOH and BM, wearing whatever they want. We haven't seen the venue in person yet, so we will see what the bare tables look like. We both personally don't care about decorations though.
