Worried about damaging my engagement ring

Danielle, on June 30, 2017 at 10:45 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 35

Hi, this is my first post. I just got my engagement ring and its perfect. However I'm terrified of chipping the diamond or the gold! I know that it probably sounds stupid... i work retail and between carrying tons of clothing with hangers, working with some hardware and using the register I'm terrified that I'll some how chip the diamond or band, lol. Is this silly? Should I stop worrying? Lol

Get insurance on the ring and wear that baby.

I can guarantee you, you will not break diamond, it is an incredibly strong rock. You will not chip it. The prongs on the other hand is a different story. The gold will get worn but you can always get it cleaned and polished. I promise your ring won't just fall apart. I teach preschool special ed and also fitness classes and put my hands through hell, ring is totally fine. You'll get used to it soon!

I worry too... I just plan on getting a fake that looks similar when doing chores or work.

Diamonds are very strong though, gold... not so much! Just make sure you have insurance on the ring!

Thanks ladies! I appreciate it! I just love it so much and don't want anything to happen to it lol. The diamond setting definitely sticks out and I'm terrified of it getting snagged or hitting it on something. Thanks for the warm welcomes! ?

It's beautiful! As PP said, diamonds are very tough so you should be fine but insurance will save you a lot of worry down the line.

I work retail too. I constantly bang my hands on shelving and it's doing just fine almost 2 years later!

So, not to burst everyone's bubble, but the Mohs scale and hardness has to do with how difficult something it to scratch not to chip or shatter, which is brittleness. Hardness and brittleness are actually inversely related where harder things tend to be more brittle. However, all of this being said, unless you're repeatedly banging it against something or happen to hit on a fault in the crystal structure, it's unlikely for this to happen. But, definitely yes to insurance!

I feel the same way! So much anxiety about damaging it, but also about losing it if I take it off to avoid damaging it! :'( I'm sure we're overreacting, though! My mom told me I'd calm down after having it on for awhile hahaha.

My physical therapist wears her e-ring on a necklace while she's at work since her hands are heavily involved in her job so maybe that's a thought?

I agree, get insurance, atleast on the center stone. I will tell you though I have been working in retail for 5 years and haven't harmed my rings much, maybe some surface scratches but not much more.

You will not break the diamond working in retail, promise. And unless your ring is gold plated, you won't chip the gold. You might scratch it, but that's easy to buff out. Wear your ring, just get it insured!

Just make sure you have insurance.. wear it, flaunt it.. It beautiful! That stone is extremely strong.. no chipping or breaking will occur, just check the prongs every now and then and you're in the clear.

I was worried about the same thing when I first got mine! Diamonds are tough and it takes a lot to damage the metal. Mine has been through remodeling my parents living room and sticking my hands in campfires and mine is still perfect and in amazing condition! If you're really worried get the silicon bands to wear, my fiancè got them since he's a nurse and his coworkers started getting them and he loves them already and can't wait to wear them!
