Wording Help

Jessica, on June 30, 2012 at 2:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

We are getting married outdoors in South Carolina in August. I want to mention that to people because I know that it will be hot so I want everyone to dress appropriately. However I also don't want people in T shirts and jeans out there. How can I word it so say to dress comfortably for outdoors and hot weather without risking having people in jean shorts and tank tops?

I think this depends on the invitation. If your invitation is formal, then people will dress formal, if the invitation has a more relaxed feel (font and wording) then people will be more casual.

Attire for guests is formal/semiformal. However it will be very hot so dress accordingly.

Hi Jessica ~ welcome to WW

Is the reception outside as well, or only the ceremony?

Be sure to start on time to reduce the amount of time they need to be out in the sun.

Making fans out of programs and providing a bottle of water will be another nice touch to squeeze out of the budget.

Sunday's best, Cocktail attire, Business Formal, Semi-Formal

are some ideas for what you can put... maybe on the information insert card? and your website? if you don't want it right on the invite (or else small at at the bottom)

    ~ congrats

Hi Jessica! Where are you getting married? On a plantation? I would have some cute umbrellas available to block the sun. We attended one in May 2 years ago and it was SO FREAKING HOT - we dressed as we would for any wedding and if they had the paper umbrellas to block the sun it would have been fine.

I would say "Dressy Casual" or Sunday's Best

We are getting married in South Carolina too!

I think the style of the invites can go a long way in communicating to your guests the type of wedding/level of formality you are planning. Your invites could also say "outdoor reception immediately to follow". You may not want to mention the dress code directly on the invite itself, but you could suggest "Sunday's Best" or "summer soirée attire" on your website.

Oy, outdoors, in the south, in August? Yikes.

I agree that you should not put any dress code information on the invitation, but you do need to communicate this information somehow. The website is a good place to state this, but, what about those who will not see the website?

I also agree that the style of your invitation will convey a message, but then, some people "just don't get it." LOL!

Jamie B has some good verbiage for style of dress. You could also use the term "summer garden party", or some such thing.
