I won yet another bridal show give-away...

MrsMeyersToBe, on June 3, 2016 at 12:05 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 44

So a few weeks ago I went to a bridal show and basically just put my name in for everything. It was smaller so I remember each and every one of the vendors. A few had some drawings you could enter.

Two weeks ago I got a call about winning something from a cutlery booth that was set up there. I didn't follow through because I remember the vendor being totally sketchy. Plus, I think when you "win" something, they really just tell every bride that entered that they won.

Now, ANOTHER vendor calls me from a different company. I remember the lady being super sweet and down to earth. She let me know that I won as well...this time my choice of a 3 day, 2 night stay in either Mexico or the Bahamas (not much time, but still would be fun!) or wedding bands for both FH and myself. She said I was one of two brides that won in the Rochester area (maybe, maybe not).

Continued....

In order to redeem one of the prizes we have to go to a "Culinary Demonstration". Fitting since the company is a kitchen supply company. The company is called, “Dinner 4 two, by Kitchen Charm” I believe they are based out of Long Island? Anyway, in order to redeem the trip/wedding bands we have to go to a culinary demonstration with them using the products, only an hour or so. In return, we get the prize, get entered in a Harley Davidson raffle for FH, fully bellies, and are on our way. Honestly, even if we don’t even get to really win the prizes, it seems like a fun date night. It is taking place at a really nice hotel about an hour away from us, so that seems safe enough to me.

I asked about the trip because FH and I already have our wedding bands picked out. The lady, JoAnne, said that it was an all-inclusive resort (I can’t remember the name at this time), the only thing we have to pay for is airfare…reasonable enough I thought.

Should we go to the demonstration just for the Hell of it? I know they will probably be total salespeople, but we can deal with that. Obviously I am going to research the crap out of them, but what do you guys think. Scam, or for real?

I'm very skeptical about these things as well, but I keep getting emails from a wedding expo nearby that are offering me the exact same thing- wedding bands or the trip. I want to go,but keep putting it off since I never even entered to win anything.

I got that call as well, read some reviews and elected not to go to their demo after that

I got the same call but didn't go. I had heard about others getting calls like this as well and idk it just seemed kinda sketchy to me. Let me know how it is if you do end up going!

ETA: I didn't even go to the bridal show where I supposedly entered my name though...I had registered for the show but never went so I'm guessing they take everyone who registered and pick names or something.

Jenny, I know I definitely entered. Like I said, we may just go for the free food! Haha! I just wonder if anyone on here has actually ever won anything and had a good experience. I don't want to be naive...

Those of you that got calls, was it for the company I mentioned above or a different company?

This is totally that episode from literally every sitcom where the gang goes to a ski resort but they have to sit through a timeshare presentation and the dummy of the group actually buys it. Ha!

We got the exact same thing from a bridal show. Somebody from "Brides Kitchen" called us offering a free trip if we go to their showroom and "just give our opinions on some of the sets they have there"!!!!

We are like "yeah free trip cool" and it was a complete culinary demonstration. The sales guy was awesome and pulled out all the stops. The pots and pans he was pitching were truly awesome, and something I would want in the future! Unfortunately for him, FH and I are not the type to drop 2k on pots and pans when we are planning a wedding. We don't need that! We were completely not sold and the guy was almost panicked at the thought that we would leave with nothing but the trip...

But that's what we did! Ha. We got a free trip out of it, and it even includes companion airfare. It was boring to sit through but it paid off big time! I say do it if you're strong-willed and have the time. And after doing research to make sure it isn't terribly sketchy haha!

I got this call and I went. It was for pots and pans and it was extreme high pressure sales. And it was a lot longer then An hour. We got the wedding bands. Fh got two because I didn't like any of them. They're nice and he likes them but they're always on sale. The trip you have to pay tax and airfare and it's very select dates to use them. So we went with the bands. There was no food only carrots they cooked for demo. I wouldn't do it again if I had the choice.

Oh my gosh, Allie, that's crazy! I honestly feel like a schmuck going because I'm sure they will be crazy AF, and may not be the real deal. Your story gives me hope it might be real though! But yeah, totally not buy $2k pots and pans. lol

O&S, that's what I'm saying. The first call from that different company was definitely lying through their teeth...this one though...may be okay? Maybe? lol I think FH and I are just going to suck it up and go.

    I'll post an update! lol

For me they said they were national registries but the phone number comes back to bridal registries which did not have good reviews I felt they were trying to hide so I opted out

Hmmm...thanks Lauren. I'd better get more than just some damn carrots! Was it for the company I mentioned above, or a different company?

I had the same type of experience, but with a different kitchen supply company.

FH and I attended the demonstration, explained we weren't interested, and asked for our prize. They were kind and sis they understood, and so far we haven't been pestered about it.

I understand the concern, but my experience was great!

@MrsMeyers to make it a little better they fed us delicious food! Very good chicken and veggies. That was the second best part! Other best was the free trip Smiley smile It was fairly high pressure, but just because they were so nice and good at what they do. They were also very kind and understanding when we turned down "deal" after "deal"!! Unfortunately (for them) I have psychology background and my FH works accounting for a sales firm so we know all the tricks and not to fall for them Smiley smile

If you do research and feel the company is legit I say go for it! Maybe you'll just get carrots and a poor vacay package like Lauren, but ours is pretty good. We can go anytime in the next two years and there are tons of locations we can visit! Might be worth the chance, might not.

@Allie- Awesome. If I can still convince FH to go, I think we may just go for it! Who knows, maybe if they have some nice stuff (that doesn't cost an arm and a leg) we'll get something. Hopefully we have an experience like you did, and not like the one Lauren had!

    Lauren- Thanks for updating!

We got a similar offer and it was a scammy scam. They were selling time shares though, once we said we weren't interested, all of a sudden we no longer got it. No thanks. Smiley smile

Wasn't National Registry, and they specified that it had nothing to do with timeshares. Hopefully that is the case.

Also, food is involved so I think we'll still go. I better get more than some damn carrots....

Yup, I've gotten this call before too. It's a scam.
