Women who are over 25 and thin: how do you do it?

Sunloved, on January 22, 2023 at 8:49 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 1 10
Something changed when I turned 26. I eat just as much as I always did (which is admittedly a lot, sometimes) but now the SCALE is raising. I miss my flat belly! I can’t imagine having it now. I eat two Oreos and the next day I look pregnant. I just cut inflammation-causing foods out of my diet in hopes that I’ll get my waist back but man I sure miss not having to work. Smiley sad

There could be a multitude of reasons for this – metabolism, genetics, hormones, underlying health issues, etc. etc. I would say it is somewhat alarming if you simply eat an Oreo cookie and then look pregnant. That is not normal. I think starting an anti-inflammatory diet is a great start! I would suggest seeing your doctor for a fasting blood panel (I would also ask them about checking your hormones and thyroid), just to make sure everything is within normal limits.

Genetics and your natural metabolism play a huge role in this. I can completely relate though as someone who was extremely thin until my late twenties, and then I was just…not haha. But that is totally natural, and women’s metabolism slows and belly fat accumulates as they age. If you don’t have the genetics to stay your ideal size, check with your doctor to make sure there’s not an underlying health issue, find an exercise regimen that feels like fun instead of work (muscle uses more energy than fat so that’s one way to increase how many calories you need in a day if you want to maintain your current eating habits), and start embracing your new adult woman body!

Are you on the birth control pill? Sometimes it can have side effects like bloat, conscription, digestion problems.

Extreme bloating isn't normal and you should speak to a doctor about it. Having weight "stick" as you get older is normal. Your metabolism slows and you don't burn as many natural calories. You could try adding in some walking 3x/week or daily if possible. See if that helps.

But honestly I think most women on here don't have a flat abdomen.

I agree with others that talking to a doctor may be necessary. Also, I suggest getting a nutritionist before making drastic changes to your diet. I learned a lot about food when I started working with one, and I realized that my "healthy" way of eating meant I was missing a lot from my diet, especially protein.

Echoing everyone to talk to medical professional(s) who can make recommendations specific to your body, hormones, nutritional needs, etc.

For me, I played competitive sports for a while. When I stopped and there was nobody making me get up at the crack of dawn and work out intensely, but I kept eating the way I always had to fuel that kind of exercise level, it became an issue. I had to really evaluate my eating habits, figure out an exercise regime, and get myself into a routine that I could stay committed to. It's still a work in progress, ESPECIALLY now that I don't have a wedding to look forward to and want to feel great for, but finding a balance of exercise and diet that you can stick with is what will help you stay healthy long-term.

Properly maintaining stress is a key thing to keep cortisol and belly fat at bay.

Haha, I was thin throughout most of my early 20s and teens but then I developed psychotic depression at about 24 and was put on antipsychotics which really made me really pack on weight. I went from a size 10 to a size 18 in a year since getting diagnosed with psychotic depression. Fiance has a similar problem with his bipolar meds.

I also have to keep reminding myself that weight aside, of course I won't look the same as I am in my early 20s, that is just a part of aging and getting older. That doesn't mean I didn't freak out a little when I started getting grey hair when I was 28 though lol

I am not the greatest example. I am over 40 but did not maintain a slender physique after age 35. I am back on track now. What I have learned is that It's mostly nutrition. If you know how to nourish yourself properly your weight won't increase drastically when you don't have the time to exercise.
I agree with the others. Professional guidance is important. It's not cheap but it's much less expensive than what I expect to pay for my wedding dress. Lol. I realize that have to take care of the INSIDE before focusing on what to put ON my body right?

Maintain a slim and flat belly, focus on a balanced diet, and regular exercise. Include whole foods, lean proteins, veggies, and stay hydrated. Incorporate cardio and core-strengthening workouts for the best results.
