Women in the grooms party

Heather Joy, on August 20, 2016 at 9:11 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 47

Hi there! My FH has two really close girl friends that he wants to be in our wedding. Originally I told him I would just have them in my bridal party, but afterwards I decided to just have them in his grooms party. I don't know them that well (we have lived out of state from his friends) so I felt kinda weird about having them in my bridal party, plus I would have too big (for my taste) of a bridal party with them plus the girls I'll be asking. Having girls in the grooms party doesn't bother me, but I'm not sure what they should wear? Has anyone had girls in their grooms party and what did you do? Do they wear a black dress to match the tux/suits and a corsage that matches the boutonnieres? Or did they match the bridal party? Thanks everyone Smiley laugh

I have heard of people going either way! She can wear something to match the other grooms people or she can wear something to match the bridesmaids. Maybe you should have FH talk to her and see what she is most comfortable with Smiley smile

Its really a matter of preference. My dad's best man was a woman and she wore a tux. My FH is having a female friend be a groomsman and she wants to wear a dress in the same color as the guys' vests. Its what ever make them feel comfortable.

I asked FH what his opinion was, he feels like it may be weird for a girl to be wearing black to the wedding (is it weird? I feel like I've seen black BM dresses before..). I feel like the context of wearing a black dress in the grooms party vs maybe wearing black as a guest is kind of different? I'm feeling more towards them matching the grooms so that way we have that groom/bridal party contrast. Hmmmm

My FH has an amazing lady in his groom's party, she and I became friends after he and I started dating so it wasn't weird to me / she came with my bridesmaids to pick out dresses and I made sure she got the same jewelry as my ladies / she's going to get her hair done with us and probably get ready with us.....to me it's like an extension of the bridesmaids who happens to stand on the groom's side but she also went with me to help pick out my dress / went with him to pick out my engagement ring so we're all close. I'm probably rambling but that's my experience hopefully that helps haha Smiley smile

Fh is having a female coworker as a groomsmaid as he calls it. We asked her just to get a floor length black dress.

I've seen girls on the groom's side in bridesmaid dresses. It worked really well!

I like the idea of a black dress. It would look quite nice with the black tuxes.

@Sam that's really awesome! So did she match the bridesmaid colors then?

I have just been starting to browse BM dresses, and I have spotted a few that I really like that also come in black. So if I end up choosing one of those dresses for my BM's I may just have the other two girls get the same dress but in the black so they at least match that aspect of my bridal party while still having that groom/bridal contrast

IDK maybe I'm the minority but I would've just let them be a bridesmaid. I don't think the only people on his side has to be his people. My brother and a friend of mine is a groomsmen. His sister is a bridesmaid.

But do what you both like

Black isn't weird in a wedding. My fam thought it was at first (my BM dresses are black) until I showed them pictures. Black is such an elegant color and looks good on almost anyone

Yes, she (his lady in the groom's party) matched the bridesmaids (same dress and same color and she'll have their bouquet too!) But whatever you like, I would think black would be nice! Smiley smile

I'm not sure what style of BM dresses you're looking at, but maybe they can have something that can have a belt/sash added to it. The women in the groom's party could wear a black dress with the belt in the color of the groomsmen's vests so that they would still be wearing the wedding colors. It might also help FH feel less weird about the black dresses.

My better half has a great girl friend who will be on his side. I'm having my girls pick a black dress they like, I think he'll tell her the same. Smiley smile

At a wedding I was in there were men and women on both sides. All women wore matching bridesmaids dresses and all men wore matching tuxes. It was beautiful and a lot of fun!

@awkward that's a good idea, none of the BM dresses I've looked at have a belt or anything, but this is just preliminary online window shopping, so maybe if I come across a dress that has that when I actually go out and about it would def be a consideration

You can also buy belts/sashes separately and add them later. I've seen color ones on Amazon before, but I'm not sure if you'd be able to get an exact color match.

The groomswoman (women) can wear bouteneeirs if it's that important they they be distinguished from your bridal party. They could wear the same dresses as your BMs. My old roommate told my FH if she was in his party, she'd gladly wear the same suit as the others. She's really into men's wear, so it would look snazzy.

My FH has two ladies in his party! We gave them the option of a black dress but they both said they wanted to be in tuxes so that's what they're doing! I have a guy on my side as well, he'll wear a dress shirt and tie to match the bridesmaids' dresses.

I don't think black is weird at a wedding...my girls wore black.

DH's best (WO)man was given the option to either buy a dress to match my girls, or if she wanted to wear pants to match the guys she could.

She opted for pants, black top, with a corset to set her apart a little bit, and a purple skinny tie. (My MOH wore a purple petticoat, so they matched).

Here'a photo, she's the one right next to me:
