Winter brides! (could use advice from broad shoulder ladies as well)

FMM, on May 27, 2015 at 10:06 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 27

Are you in an area with snow? What are your plans for outdoor photos?

Our photographer recommends tights and boots, which I am totally ok with (I love tights and boots). I am torn on what to wear over my arms though, I don't like fur so that is out (fake or not) I considered a cardigan but I have broad shoulders and sweaters usually make me look larger. Would a coat look to weird?

What are you doing to stay warm? jackets? sweaters? boots?

    You're a Michigan gal right?

Scarves if it's a warmer cold day. Vest maybe (I don't wear them).

    Hoodie/sweatshirt look cute too.

I am big shouldered too (and way short) and I went sleeveless in some of our summer pics. BLORP!

eta: Duh--for your wedding, not your epics--sorry Smiley sad nm on the hoodie!

I think I would wear a coat or a cape with a collar.

I have broad shoulders and muscular arms, and my tricks for making myself not look like a linebacker are: emphasize small waist, don't wear short sleeves (they cut me off at my widest point, I wear sleeveless or elbow length, see my avatar), and adding volume at my neck/midchest like with a decorative scarf or collar, and volume in my hair/pretty makeup/jewelry to draw the eyes up.

If you opt for a cape or capelet make sure it ends at your waist, elbows, or lower so you don't create a line at a wide point on your body.

ETA You probably know this, but a v neck will also break up your upper body and make you look leaner or more shapely, not wide. A scarf or long necklace will also give a lengthening effect.

    I am a MI gal!

I didn't consider scarves! That might be cute to get my girls as well. I could steal one of FH hoodies as well. I am fine not covering my arms for some photos..I just don't want to end up a bridecicle Smiley winking

Someone told me the trick to wearing cardigans is to make sure that the seam on the shoulder actually falls on the outside of your should, not anywhere closer to your neck. It's hard to explain but it makes a huge difference. I have a hard time finding cardigans with shoulders broad enough but when I do I love them!

Have you looked into like boleros? Three-quarter length or long sleeves would look nice. Or a shawl--it doesn't have to be fur.

I haven't looked at boleros.. I am worried it'll have the same effect as the cardigans. The broad shoulder struggle is real.

You could have a velvet cape or wool. Doesn't have to be fur. A wool peacoat would be really cute.

What kind of cut is your dress? If you have a more ballgown or a-line it'll probably balance out your shoulders, especially if you can find a white cardigan/bolero. Otherwise maybe a cape type idea.

Pretty! Mine was kind of like that too Smiley smile You could always bring a cardigan or pashmina (even if it's not THE cardigan) to your next fitting. It might work best if it's white if you're really worried about your shoulders, but I think honestly with that dress silouette you could go with any colour that matches your theme.

Thanks Lady Monk! I didn't think about the balance the dress might bring to it.. I will bring a cardigan with me to the fitting, if It looks ok I will try to find a dark green one Smiley winking

    Thank you all!

Love that Elyse! I'd do a little knit bolero or cardigan; maybe even in a darker color.

Okay-- playing Devil's Advocate here, but Keira Knightley has some WIDE shoulders, and this cardigan totally works-- I think the key is that its really open in the front, and just barely hits her shoulders on the side, so I wouldn't rule out cardigans completely.

Otherwise, I don't think a coat would look bad at all. I would maybe go with a cropped jacket or a swing coat so that your skirt can stay full and won't be pressed down by it.

I got my girls champagne colored pashminas, and I want to get myself one that maybe matches the wedding colors. I don't know how many outdoor photos we're doing yet though. I'm also in Michigan, and as we all know, November weather can be sunny and 65 or blizzarding and -10.

Ooh even though I'm getting married in California, I still have been looking into a bolero to cover my shoulders during the church ceremony... I agree, you should bring a sample cardigan or coverup to your next fitting and see what works best! I know my bridal shop also carries a lot of coverups for sale, so you can at least get an idea of which style you like!

The green velvet coat above is gorgeous. Kiera Knightly also looks darling in her cardigan with the tulle skirt. I know you said you don't care for fur, but I wanted to show you what my grandmother's mink stole will look like with a ballgown.
