Wine Choice/Update Vegetable Choice too...

Linds, on January 6, 2017 at 8:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 37

We have open bar for our wedding - however, during dinner, the venue serves wine at the table. We can pick any wine - but it's only one wine for the entire venue for dinnertime.

I know what my favorites are, but I'm not sure if that's just my choice vs what other people also like.

What do you think is the most commonly enjoyed or generally popular type of wine?

Thanks Smiley smile

I think a mild white is good if you only get to have one wine. Red is trickier, for me at least, to pair.

@Brittany - I like moscato too! But I know it's very sweet for lots of people.

@Margaret - I agree, and think white is a lot easier to please the masses, but there's even a ton of white choices!

Our venue offered that option too and we decided to opt out of it. With an open bar we figured they could get what they way

They close the bar during the serving of dinner, to make it easier to have plated entrees served in a reasonable time frame, and make sure food is hot/on time.

It's pretty common in my area, it wouldn't be my first choice, but it's the plan as of right now.

Yeah ive def been to weddings like that. Stinks that you can't do 1 white and 1 red, did you ask? Sometimes they will work with you

I think Moscato or Pino is the best. But is there a certain wine that goes better for taste with your meal? That'll work to.

@FutureMrsL - we did ask, and it's only one wine choice.

Our meals are the following (which I think mostly lean towards white as well)

BEEF TENDERLOIN grilled beef tenderloin served with katherine's mashed potatoes and chef's vegetable

WALNUT CRUSTED CHICKEN twin breaded chicken breast cutlets with a sweet walnut butter sauce and a hit of spice served with katherine's mashed potatoes and chef's vegetable

SCALLOPS five pan seared scallops over a bed of red pepper and roasted corn risotto with a citrus brown butter sauce

VEGETABLE VERDITA angel hair pasta, garlic, kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, spinach, sun dried tomatoes, feta cheese and finished with a white wine butter herb sauce

I would probably go with Sauvignon Blanc. Chardonnay can be tricky for those who don't like the buttery taste.

Based on your menu I'd go red, maybe a nice Merlot or Cabernet

Omg your menu sounds amazing. White would be kind of disappointing for the beef tenderloin, but otherwise better for the majority of the dishes. If you only get one, definitely don't do moscato-it's a wine that pretty much only the people who like it will drink. Something more middle of the road like a Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc would probably please the most people-aka even if it's not really your choice, you'd still drink it in order to have wine. FWIW I used to be a bartender in a steakhouse.

I would do Pinot or Sauvignon. Don't do Moscato, it's way too sweet for a lot of people, definitely caters to a very specific taste.

Your menu sounds amazing! I think Pinot would work good. It's not my personal favorite but I would drink it if it was sitting at the table.

Thanks for all the responses - I think we're going to go to the venue's restaurant and trial a few pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc to see what we enjoy.

As much as I would love to have a glass of moscato - I can't imagine doing that to my guests haha.

I also have a vegetable question. With the menu above - which would you prefer?

    green beans

    green beans almandine

    glazed carrots

roasted brussel sprouts with balsamic glaze

I will preface this with...I come to this from the perspective of someone who works in the wine business.

Okay, based on your meal choices, I would recommend a domestic Pinot Gris (not an Italian Pinot Grigio). This is if you can only do one wine. It should have enough weight to carry itself with the beef.

You could also do a Chardonnay, but make sure that it is not overly oaky. An unoaked Chardonnay could work.

I would avoid Sauvignon Blanc as it will not pair well with the beef and depending on the actual brand chosen, it can either be light or very in our face and tart.

If you can get them to do a white and a red, my white suggestion stands and I would go with a Cabernet Sauvignon for the red.

I vote glazed carrots. We've a few with nut allergies, in our family/social circle. I'd forget the Brussel spouts, because not everyone likes them. We've been to weddings where the vegetable choice was kale (bitter) and squash (blah!) and a lot wasn't eaten.

I'm a Moscato girl myself so I have nothing helpful on a good dinner pairing unfortunately! I think green beans will go over best with everybody bc it is so familiar.

I'd go with a light pinot noir. It can stand up to the beef and is light enough to pair well with the rest of your options.

For the veg options my choice would be the green beans.
