Will having a photobooth take away from the reception?

betty, on October 22, 2010 at 1:20 AM Posted in Planning 0 8

I really want a photobooth, but I don't want to lose people through out the night and miss the party. I am afraid the photobooth might take away from my reception. Plus, I am paying a lot of money for my photographer and videographer and do not want to insult them by getting a photobooth. Do you think having a photobooth is big distraction from the reception?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks so much!

I have seen it go both ways. If you have the space and its a option bring the photo booth inside the reception area so your guests are not all outside waiting and taking multiple photos This allows the dj to still pull them in and read the crowd. If you dont have the option make sure the photobooth is open only about 2 hours if you are concerned that you will lose your guests to the booth. This way you still have a good hour or two to really party with your friends and family.

An option we like to offer is a small photo set where each couple can do a shot which is printed in seconds. They then glue the image into a scrapbook of your choosing and sign a message. We also provide a 2nd print for the couple to take home with them. So like a photo booth but has a limit and a reason to be there. We can typically capture most of your guests and have the photos printed during your cocktail hour not interfering with your reception.

I went to a wedding with a photo booth. It didn't take away at all. It was kinda to the side, but still part of the reception. The dj announced how long they would be there so everyone knew how long they had.

I've shot at a wedding that had a photo booth and it didn't insult me at all. Guests still came up to me asking to have their picture taken as well. Just be sure to limit the time the booth is open.

I've seen photobooths work very well. They tend to enhance, rather than interfere with the wedding reception most of the time. However, they are costly and you need to book them for the whole evening, not just a specific period of time.

The reason I bring this up... at a recent wedding, the bride and groom were scheduled to cut the cake at 9:00. The cake was starting to melt (good ole Southern California Heat Wave), so we needed to get it cut as soon as possible. The photo booth was scheduled to close at 9:00. The bride and groom chose to go to the photo booth for a few last shots instead of cutting the cake. I did my best to get the bride and groom back on track to cut their cake without saying "your cake is melting" but we had no choice. Cake was cut at 9:30... and it was melted. Had they hired the photo booth for the whole reception (which ended at 10:00 PM), the issue would not have come up.

Make sure you know what you're getting and read the fine print.

I think you'll be fine with the photobooth.. Im going to have 1 @ my reception for the favors. The few weddings that I've been to that have had photo booths have been a total hit all the way around!

We had a photobooth, too, and it was a great hit! The guests loved that they could be as silly as they wanted to in the pics, write something to us in the photobooth, and had something to take home with them to remind them what a great time they had! It was off to the side in the bar separate from the reception room so anyone going to the bar for their drinks had to pass by it and it wasn't crowded and out of control at all. And everyone still had time to eat, dance, watch the cake cutting...In my opinion it was work the $1k spent to have it there - of course, it was in place of our photographer and videographer, too, so we saved money in that aspect. I think it was a great addition!
