Why Do We Wear Our Wedding Ring On Our Left Hand?

The Bride, on July 10, 2019 at 10:10 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 18

When my now husband proposed to me I knew that he would place the ring on my left hand, the same thing was true with my wedding band when we got married but I never questioned why. Today my husband and I were discussing why we wear our wedding ring on our left hand and jokingly came to the conclusion that it's because our heart is slightly tilted to the left.

What are your thoughts? Why do we wear our wedding ring on our left hand? How do you know?

I googled It because I was curious 🤣 apparently it was speculated in Roman times that the vein of your left finger ran all the way to your heart. It was called the vena amoris or vein of love.

The first wedding rings are believed to date back to ancient Egypt, when people wove grasses and reeds into circles symbolizing eternity and completeness. The Egyptians wore their rings on the fourth finger of the left hand, believing that a vein from that finger led directly to the heart. The Romans called this the vena amoris, or ‘vein of love.’”

Fun fact: in Judaism, the ring is traditionally put on the index finger of the right hand. The idea is that the husband giving the wife a ring is a necessary part of the ceremony. Thus, you want the ring on the most visible finger so that onlookers can see that this part of the ceremony was conducted correctly.

These days, most Jewish brides move the ring to the ring finger of the left hand after the ceremony, but that's not where it starts out.

I've known about the vein thing for a while but I'm left handed so it's natural for me. 🤷

Funny enough when I was younger I liked to wear my jewelry on my left-hand side so it was natural for me as well.

While I wear my engagement ring on my left hand. My wedding band is going on my right hand. I wasn't happy with either straight or curved bands with my engagement ring.

I originally found the quote on a Medium blog; when I tried re-tracing my search, I came across the same information on the following site: https://www.mytriorings.com/cultural-differences-wearing-bridal-rings-on-the-left-or-the-right-hand
