Why are bridesmaid dresses so ugly?

Anonymous, on March 5, 2011 at 1:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 26

It seems everywhere I look, I can only find stiff, thick and unflattering styles of dresses that no girl would ever where again after they are a bridesmaid unless they were modifying it into a halloween costume. I don't really want to do that to my BMs. They are gorgeous girls and will wear whatever I put them in, but I want them to look good. I feel like these companies are purposely made to make sure the bridesmaids don't look as good as the bride. I do not suffer from an "oh no, my bridesmaids may look hotter" insecurity, and I'd like my wedding party to also look beautiful

It almost seems I have better luck when I search under "key lime dresses" instead of "key lime bridesmaid dresses".

Anybody agree? If you have any suggestions or have come across websites with dress styles that weren't made from a bedroom curtain, please do tell

I agree some dresses can be horrid. However, others can be quite nice. I am wearing a bridesmaid dress for my wedding gown. I bought it from Alfred Angelo. It will be in champagne. What you can't see in the pic is that it laces up the back and has a sweep train.

I agree. That's why I chose to have my dresses tailor made. I just couldn't find a long dress that was appropriate for my wedding style. I can't be the only fabulous one there. I care about these girls. I can't have them looking a mess.

I'm with you, i hate bridesmaids dresses. Sooooo go to a real store and just have them buy matching dresses. Banana Republic & Ann Taylor have gorgeous dresses & you can order them in practically every size.

Depending on what the budget is for dresses, J. Crew has really pretty ones, and as Kimberly mentioned, Banana Republic and Ann Taylor have super nice ones too. I found mine at Nordstrom. L'Atelier, shoplatelier.com, has really pretty dresses that they custom make....and they have pockets..Smiley smile Good luck!

I am usually not a fan, which is why I let my cousin pick any dress from anywhere that she liked the most. She picked the color too.

My girls are going to be getting them from macys. They look like this.

    http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=341494&CategoryID=5449&LinkType=#fn=COLOR%3DBlack%26sp%3D4%26spc%3D260

To add a pop of color I am buying red flower hair pieces and giving them to them

I think kinda depends on the dress..maybe its harder since you have more rare color..mine is navy, so pretty common among BM dresses. Good luck!

I agree that's why I'm going to include my girls in the search. I'll have them start looking for different styles elsewhere, I don't really care about anything but the color, they'll choose what they want.

I felt the same way as you. Bridesmaid dresses look like costumes to me and I want my girls to look beautiful! I wanted something purple and satiny that would look good with my dress..tried going to macys, nordstroms etc to look but I struck out. My dress is kinda traditional so all the cute dresses just looked too modern and trendy next to it. I finally settled on a really cute black dress from whitehouseblackmarket.com

You just have to keep your eyes open for something different. I mean, it doesn't have to be a "bridesmaid dress" I bought my girls dresses at JCPenny because I thought the dress was cute lol. I agree a lot of traditionally labeled BM dresses suck but if your looking for a key lime color that is an interesting color, just keep looking. Here is what I got :-)

On a sitcom I've been watching for years, the FMIL said that the bridesmaids dresses are supposed to be hideous to make the bride look better. I laughed my butt off at that line!

I am having my girls pick real dresses that they actually like and look good on them. I put an inspiration board of dresses in colors and styles that would look nice with the style of the wedding so that they could use it as a guide. I just ask that they show me the dress before they buy it... this way they get a color and style that looks great on them and it doesn't look like a "bridesmaid" dress, so they can wear it again and again.

Go to www.57grand.com. New York based company. We went with the Perry style of dress. I have 2 bridesmaids who already have plans to wear them again to other events. I was actually a little disappointed I wasn't getting one!

I agree. Unless your brides have a budget of over $200, you cannot get a great bridesmaids dress. They are usually made of acetate (cheap fabric) or some kind of polyester that is not quality. This is done to make the dress more affordable. I always tell my bride to buy the best dress she can afford. In terms of the bridesmaids, I always advise that if budget is limited, many seamstresses (you can go ask several cleaners in your area if they can recommend one) who can make an exact replica of the dress you want and you choose a better fabric. They usually charge from $100-200 per dress, but it will be custom in a beautiful fabric like a satin charmeusse, a good quality organza or silk, or a blend that is rich in quality and texture. For unique dresses, go to:

    bridalreflections.com

    pricey, but fabulous.

    Good luck!
