Mrs. Paula
Super October 2010

Whose name goes first?

Mrs. Paula, on October 8, 2010 at 10:02 AM Posted in Planning 0 13

My job threw me a bridal shower the other day and I received a beautiful cake server set that I had registered for. I am almost 100% positive that I want to get it engraved, but i'm not sure if his name of my name should go first. His name is Michael and most people call him Mike, but if I get it engraved I think I will put Michael. Had the same dilemma with napkins too, and I actually have 2 sets of napkins with one saying Paula and Michael and the other saying Michael and Paula, but I think i'm going to use both sets regardless.

I'd go with Michael and Paula. By the time you'll be using it you'll be married, so it would be appropriate.

Everything I've ever been asked to fill out in regards to a wedding had the bride's name first and then the groom's....

I've just seen some items advertised with bride's name first but other times I see the groom's name first. Seems like majority of the time the bride's name is first. But I was thinking that maybe the bride's name is first because she is the one who is ordering the napkins or getting the item's engraved. I just didn't know if their was a rule for this and proper etiquette was.

I personally think in regards to the wedding it's bride then groom but in regards to married life it's usually his then hers. Whichever you like most :-)

I agree with everyone else that it can probs be either. For wedding stuff it bride's then groom. Actually when I was doing my escort cards I read the female comes first so I addressed them that way with the wife's name first and then the husband's. This was for the informal adressing like Sarah and Jon Smith.

I know I've seen it traditionally with Bride first then Groom for wedding stuff, but then Husband then Wife for married stuff...but I did both for our wedding, depending on what the item was - i.e. ribbons, me then him, cake him then me...it got confusing and nothing followed tradition with me but I'm not all about tradition so it fits with my character...I think it's whichever way you prefer, like Nicci said above, though...

It's whichever sounds better! For us, that's my name first!

I would go with what ever sounds better! LOL But, I think since it's something you use when you're married, You put his name first. The way I *think* it goes is: during the engagement/planning process, you're name goes first, on the invites, wedding website, etc. But for stuff that would be used for after the ceremony, you would put his first, so it would be on your napkins, cake server, etc.

Without last name, it should be Michael and Paula. With last name, his name should be kept together, so Paula and Michael Smith or Mr. and Mrs. Michael Smith.

For napkin monogram, it should be P S M (if the last name is in the middle and the S is larger).

I used to work at Thing's Remembered and engraved those things on a daily basis. The bride's name goes first on anything that comes before the wedding. Always use the full name so it would be Paula and Michael and the last name. If you use a monogram the husbands last name initial will go in the middle and should be larger than the other initials. Your first name initial will go on the left side and his on the right. As far as the napkins go, you have already paid for them so I say use them.
