Who's doing a dessert bar?

Emily, on June 27, 2016 at 2:27 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 28

I am imagining a dessert bar with tons and tons of variety, but with a guest list of 100 I'm wondering how much I should have?? Would smaller quantities of more things be ok or should I focus on a few things with enough of everything? What's your dessert menu?

We are doing a dessert bar with smaller quantities of everything (though we still haven't solidified numbers.)

We are doing macarons, cheesecake pops, and mini versions of various cupcakes and tarts.

We are doing a dessert bar. We are doing it instead of a wedding cake and also in place of favors (with boxes for people to take home treats if they're too full from our bbq catering!)

For us, we are sticking to mini cup cakes, cookies in a few flavors, brownies and bars. Since we are skipping cake we are making sure there are enough mini cup cakes for everyone to have at lease one (130 guests planned... so we are doing 150 mini cup cakes) and then a couple dozen of every other thing.

We figured some people would take a few things and some people would take none, but we are over planning because we can always pass left overs off to family.. but don't want to run out and have people get none!

I didn't, but I've been to two weddings with dessert bars and I can tell you I avoided both because I love cake and wanted only wedding cake. Since they both had cake, I went there. If you do a dessert bar in addition to cake, not everyone will go for the bar. If you do it instead of the bar, please have cupcakes for cake-loving girls like me! :-)

Not a bar necessarily. We are having a variety of cupcakes and a s'mores bar. We are also ordering cupcake boxes for people to take stuff home with them in case we have a lot leftover (once the party is over, the DPH states you cannot take anything with you. All leftover food is wasted).

Ideally you should have 2-3 pieces per person for bite-sized stuff. 1 pp for bigger items like a cupcake/slice of cake. You don't want to order 75 pieces but have all 100 people want some.

We're doing a 2-tier cake and dessert table. If I remember correctly it will have eclairs, cream puffs, brownies, tiramisu, chocolate covered strawberries, and a couple of different kinds of cookies.

    ETA: I forgot the cheesecake.

We are doing a pie bar! My family has a tradition to have homemade pies (made by my nana and aunts) at our wedding! We will have cake as well.

We're having a dessert table as our favors in addition to our cake with mini pound cakes, mini sweet potato pies, candies, and other treats.

I want to do this. All I came up with ate cupcakes, cannolis, and macarons.

I will be stalking this thread for inspiration.

Thanks ladies! I would like this to be something guests can bring home as well. So far I'm thinking cupcakes or cake pops, chocolate covered Oreos and pretzels, rice Krispy treats, and macarons. Thinking of things that travel well.

In addition to traditional cake, we had a milk and cookies bar. My sister, aunt and I made all the cookies and we got milk from a local dairy (who delivers door to door in glass quart bottles!). It was a hit.

I wanted to do a professional dessert bar but it cost $12-17 per person which was out of my price range. The vendor does beautiful arrangements of cake pops, cookies, mini éclairs and cannoli, cupcakes, candy (including rock candy which looks gorgeous).

Ours is not called a dessert table, but we are having a cookie table, which is traditional here. In addition to wedding cake, we are having about 15-20 different kinds of cookies, all made by four of my cousins and me.

I thought about having a dessert bar, but we're having a brunch with a waffle bar that includes crazy things like chocolate and red velvet waffles, and we'll also have the normal breakfast pastries. So I think it would be overkill. We're just going to have a wedding cake instead.

One day, I hope to go to a Pennsylvania wedding and see these magical things called cookie tables.

At the catering company I worked for we did 3/pp, so think about 300 small dessert bites.

Some people just said "a mix of whatever sounds good" and some people would request "macarons, cheesecake bites, turtle brownies, and mini fruit tarts" or whatever.

I would talk to your caterer and see what they suggest.

ETA: we kept a battalion of desserts from several different kinds of cheesecakes and brownies, lemon bars, pecan pie bars, macarons, fruit tarts, cookies. Yeah, it was ridiculous.

We will be doing one with variety of cakes (in lieu of a wedding cake), tarts, pastries, cookies etc.

Good variety but prob not 1 pp as it will be later in the night when some ppl have left.

This is in addition to a plated dessert from dinner. We will also provide take out boxes in case some want to take some home. Better than wasted leftovers.

In addition to cake, we are doing chocolate covered strawberries (my absolute favorite), my IL are doing a cookie bar (a tradition in their family to do for all weddings) and then I am surprising guests with ice cream sundae making bar when the cake is cut. Smiley smile

Oh and our favors are make-your-own trail mix bags during the app hour.

    Edit - for additional info

    Sugar overload - YYYYYAAAASSSS
