Who stands where at the ceremony?

Mrs. Boat, on January 21, 2011 at 12:37 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

Sorry y'all, on a roll with the questions today:

Do all brides stand on the left during the ceremony? Is there a reason to stand on the left and the groom on the right?

do you think it's weird if I change it to where I am on the right and he's left?

    Answer from ABOUT.COM

Here's why grooms usually stand on the right and brides on the left during a wedding ceremony.

Long ago, the right arm was considered the sword arm of most fighting men. If a man had to protect his bride, he would hold her with his left hand, and fight off attackers with his right arm.

The reason that men may have had to fight off others was because quite often women were kidnapped. Family members naturally wanted to rescue the stolen brides. Sometimes even during the wedding ceremony, the grooms had to fight off other men who were desirous of their brides, along with the bride's family members. So having his right arm free was an important strategy.

This tradition is followed today by when facing the officiant, having the bride stand to the left, and the groom stand to the right.

Another reason is that the union of the right hands of the bride and groom symbolizes their union as one, their strength in being together, and the combine CONT

Their strength in being together, and the combined resources that they bring to their marriage.

During a Jewish ceremony, the bride is often on the right and the groom is on the left.

Not sure if it would be a rule breaker to switch it up I assume its up to you as a couple

@STB....Wow, that is exactly why I want to be on the right. lmao! I am doing a side pony tail, and it is usually on the right. If I am on the left, it will look like hair is growing out between us. However, the best side in terms of procession is from the left, so he is just going to have to move his butt over to the left.

In Catholic ceremonies, the female stands on the side in which the statue of the Blessed Mother is located. It is also how one determines the bride's side and the groom's side for seating.

I know when we are walking in public, the FH is always on the side where the strett is to protect me from whatever. Apparently in the horse and buggy days, it was to protect the lady from the splashing puddles of horse crap. Smiley smile

When I officiate beach weddings, I position the couple so the breeze is not blowing the bride's hair and/or veil into her face.

Also, if you reverse yourselves, the bride's family will be able to see her face instead of the back of her head (and same for the groom's family)
