Who Is The "breadwinner" In Your Relationship/ Marriage?

The Bride, on July 18, 2019 at 5:19 PM

A “breadwinner” is a person who makes the most money in a household and is most likely to pay the bills for the family. Who is the "breadwinner" in your relationship/marriage? Is he/she paying for the wedding? Do you believe a specific gender should be the "breadwinner"? Why or why not?

I am. I'm paying for the wedding. I think as long as you're fed, clothed, and happy it doesn't matter who makes the money.

When you look at base salary I make way more than FH. But I also contribute to 401, insurance, etc.. so we get paid just about the same. I might bring an extra $100 home, but he do not contribute to those things because his job does not offer it except insurance. When we first got together I was making double his income, but his new paralegal position has helped a ton! I have made most of the payments towards the wedding, but after a long talk of the wedding being about BOTH of us! We are splitting the remainder of all payments in half. It's never bothered us who made more, but we agree I'll take care of all the bills in the future because I'm more organized.

I agree that both partners should contribute financially.

If you got a raise and became the "breadwinner" do you think your future husband would be okay with that?

Are you having a honeymoon right after the wedding? If so, will you be paying for it or will your spouse?

Nope. I get all my vacation time allotted in January so by the time our October wedding comes around I likely won't have much left, and he'll likely be at a new job so we decided to wait six months to a year after. He wants to pay for the honeymoon so I figured with the prices of honeymoons nearly as much as our wedding it'd even out.

I am currently the "breadwinner." FH and I are perfectly good with that. I have heard that guys tend to prefer being the breadwinner, I guess it's a pride or "taking care of the family" thing. I don't think either gender should care who the "breadwinner" is as long as bills are paid and essentials are taken care of. I am using more of my money to pay for wedding things than he is, however his parents and mine have been generous in paying for most of the wedding. His mom, even though she complains about them spending more money than my family on the wedding (doesn't make sense because she paid for her own wedding and knows my family doesn't have a lot of money compared to hers), pretty much goes out and buys everything FH says we are thinking about or considering...so she doesn't give him (or my family) the opportunity to buy anything for our wedding.

Yes we are opening a joint account this weekend lol. After the wedding we will split our checks 80/20. 80 for the joint account for bills, savings, vacations, emergencies, etc. With the 20 for personal use. The percentage will be vary. I'm thinking we will be able to do 60/40!
