White gold not so white

I shook it off as it being because the light in the shower is orangey. Well yesterday I was playing around and put my wedding band on (shhhh don't tell FH. He hates when I mess with it) and noticed that next to the clean white gold wedding band my ring looked even more yellow! I'm the only one who sees it but it bothers me! I guess what I'm asking is do you guys see it too or am I crazy? And if it's there does white gold usually do this??

At a minimum take your ring when showering, applying lotion or cleaning. Exposure to chemicals is not good for it. Also take it off when doing hard labor (ex. Working out, shoveling snow or outdoor labor) to minimize wear abs tear

Yup. Mine is white gold and looks the same when paired with my wedding bands too.

I took it to the jeweler and they said they'd dip it and then solder them together before the wedding. They also said 2-3 weeks for that.

Like everyone else said, it's normal. Gold (metal) is a naturally yellow (gold) color and additives make it white. So it eventually goes back to its natural color once the extras wear off. You can have it replated and will need to do so but if you're careful and don't wear it in the shower, pool, while cleaning or handling other chemicals, etc., it won't turn as quickly.

The jeweler can do it quickly but some have a 2-3 week backlog of work and that may have been the reason he said it would take that long. The jeweler I used to work for scheduled his repairs and designs that way so we always had to tell people that it would take a week plus.

White gold wears. Especially if you wear it all the time. Like in the shower and while cleaning. Like everyone else said, you can get it dipped.

Are you taking it to the same place FH bought it?

I see what you are talking about. But, you shouldn't be wearing it in the shower. My ring is also white gold and I take it off anytime it could come into contact with soaps/lotions/makeup or anything like that. It's an expensive piece of jewelry and I'd never want to fast-forward any discoloring it may naturally develop over time!

Im not going to lie, I see it too. It isnt a huge difference and I definitely would not have noticed if you didnt ask. But, I am a bit OCD and pay serious attention to detail. Have you had the ring professionally cleaned? It can definitely be replated but 2-3 weeks seems like a very long time. I would go back and speak to someone different or check out another trusted jeweler. Also, check the cleaning solution you are using. Some cleaners specifically say they are not safe for white gold.

Don't shower with your white gold ring, or swim in a pool or the ocean, really do anything that could be abrasive to your e-ring. That's literally the first thing a jeweler would tell you. You want to prolong the life of you ring.

You can have it cleaned and re-dipped whenever it gets closer to your date, but stop wearing it while showering.

It needs to be maintained. It gets dull and has to be dipped.

Go ahead and redip it. The rhodium plating is probably wearing off, which does happen over time and it's necessary to have it re-dipped periodically. If you take care of your ring (take it off when you shower, don't wear it to the gym it in the pool/ocean, don't wear it while you clean, and don't wear it when you're working in the kitchen, etc), then you won't need to have it re-dipped as frequently.

Get a little ring dish or holder so you have a designated space to put your ring at home when you're doing something that you should take your ring off to do. DH and I have two of these dishes. We keep one on the kitchen counter and one on our bathroom counter. They say "Mr. and Mrs."

My ring is white-gold as well. It is totally normal for it to yellow over time, so don't fret! Like others have said, re-dipping it will do the trick (they'll most likely clean it while they're at it. At least they do for me). DH got the life care plan for my ring, so I take it in once every six months to get it inspected, cleaned and re-dipped. I definitely would suggest taking it off during showers, though.

2-3 weeks seems extreme to me though. I took my ring in last month on the 14th and got it back on the 18th. I wanted to get it re-dipped and cleaned before the wedding.

Apart from PP advice, I was going to also say that it's a good idea to get a little ring dish. My mom got me one right after I got engaged.

Once you start taking your ring off all the time, it's so easy to mindlessly leave it somewhere. It's good to have a go-to spot that is away from any drains or trash cans.

I usually take it off whenever I do anything around water/chemicals. A few weeks ago I was in a hurry and completely forgot to take it off before my shower and that's when I noticed it. I'm usually very careful with it which is why I was so bummed when it started to yellow. Thanks guys.

Sarah - don't beat yourself up about it. The yellowing still happens over time to everyone. It's normal. Heck, I got my e-ring redipped last January and noticed a difference in coloration between it and my band when I picked up my finished band from the jeweler in March just before our wedding, and I'm super careful. Just looking at my e-ring, it looked great, but next to the brand new white gold band, you could see a difference. I just had then redip my e-ring that day so both of my rings would be freshly dipped right before the wedding. Redipping the e-ring right before I started wearing both rings ensures that the rhodium plating on both rings will wear at the same rate.

Like everyone has said, take it off!! Dishes, lotion, showering, pool, makeup, sleeping. I totally understand wanting to wear it all the time but taking it off for all of these things will keep it nicer longer. This will help with not only discoloration but physical damage as well like scratches or loose stones. I have a solitaire with pave setting diamond band and the jeweler calls it a "high maintenance" style because all the diamonds are so exposed and can be knocked loose easily. Luckily Shane Co (my jeweler) insures all jewelry for free and does free cleanings, inspections, repairs, polishings and plating, replacements if you loose any of the diamonds (yes even the center!) for the life of the jewelry. Well worth it for me!

Rhodium dipping is literally a 5 minute process. I used to do it 100xs a day when I worked at a jewelry retailer. We'd have girls bringing in their rings for annual inspection & cleaning/polishing all day long as part of their warranty.

All white gold is yellow gold that's been treated to appear white so the color will fade over time depending how rough you are on it. We used to recommend rhodium dip 1-2 times a year since it doesn't hurt it. There's literally no reason to have it sent out for any period of time. Find a local jeweler who can polish (only do polish once a year at most) & rhodium it for you while you wait. Whole process should take under 10 minutes.

Call around and find a jeweler that will rhodium dip in-house. Ours does it while you wait. I don't want my ring getting sent anywhere if I can help it!!

Take it off when you're cleaning and showering. I don't wear mine to do any of that and it looks brand new and as shiny as the day I got it.

Have it redipped at the jewelry store. Depending where you took it, it might be free. I just had mine done. They had to send it out so it took about a week and there was no cost.
