White gold not so white

Sarah, on October 5, 2017 at 4:32 AM Posted in Planning 0 44

My ring is a white gold band with a simple marquise diamond. It's beautiful. I absolutely love it. Lately I've noticed when I'm in the shower that the band is starting to turn yellow. I shook it off as it being because the light in the shower is orangey. Well yesterday I was playing around and put my wedding band on (shhhh don't tell FH. He hates when I mess with it) and noticed that next to the clean white gold wedding band my ring looked even more yellow! I'm the only one who sees it but it bothers me! I guess what I'm asking is do you guys see it too or am I crazy? And if it's there does white gold usually do this??

(Pictures attached below. I'm on mobile so bare with me!)

I'm not seeing what you are seeing. Maybe take it to a jeweler? Also, not to be rude, but your ring looks a tad tight.

Yes. White gold will start to yellow with harsh chemicals and normal wear. You need to take it to the jeweler on a regular basis to have it dipped again in rhodium.

@lillybean it's not. It actually slides off of my finger all the time. I don't have a very big knuckle so if the ring slips a little up on my finger it comes right off. No knuckle to stop it. It does look tight though. Not sure why cause as I said. It literally falls off all the damn time

If it slides off, try a spacer. But the photo unfortunately makes it look tight to me.

I think like Kaye suggested, having it redipped would help the coloring issue. I really couldn't tell a color difference though but I'm sure in person it might be more noticeable.

Get a good cleaning solution too and clean it often. That could help a little.

It looks tight in person, as well but any bigger and I'd lose it for sure. It's honestly the most annoying thing I've ever had to deal with. When getting it resizes I tried getting it a size bigger but the jeweler refused because it's already loose.

I took it to my jeweler and they said they didn't see it then said "if you want we can do it but it'll take 2-3 weeks" and I wasn't willing to part with it for that long if I'm just seeing things. But at the same time the guy was kind of a jerk and was in a rush.

    I have a $4 cleaning solution from T.J.Maxx. I'm cheap af

White gold will yellow over time - it's the rhodium plating wearing off. I had both my wedding band and my e-ring dipped just before Christmas last year and my wedding band is already yellowing again, which annoys me because I'd had it for 18 months before it needed dipping the first time. Weirdly the e-ring isn't, although I don't wear it every day so that may have something to do with it. I'll get it done at some point in the next few months, but I'll be going to a different jeweller this time. But yeah, it's pretty normal.

Wow 2-3 weeks for a dip? I took mine in to get cleaned the Thursday before my wedding. Mentioned it and they dipped it while I waited.

@jerseygirl I'm 100% sure he just didn't want to deal with it. He was extremely rude every time we asked him any question or suggested that something should be done. I'm just gonna wait until our usual jeweler is in shop and she can do it for us

Wearing it in the shower is making it yellow quicker so you should definitely stop that. It's also going to make your ring super dirty with the soap buildup. It's totally normal for white gold to yellow over time but cleaning solution is not going to help (in fact, it may make it worse), it needs to be dipped in the plating. 2-3weeks has to be a lie on their part. My FFIL is a jeweler and I have another ring he made me years ago which turns yellow over time. Every time I've given him the ring he gives it back to me later that day freshly plated. Even that ring, though, only yellowed after about 4-5 years of wear. If you're wearing your ring in the shower you will have to re-plate it a lot more often.

I've noticed my e-ring is yellowing on the underside. I've only had it a few months so I guess I'll stop wearing it in the shower. I just don't like taking it off. Until now I only took it off to put lotion on.

Cleaning won't take away the yellow, as it's just the color of the gold showing. As others have mentioned, only redipping will fix it. I'd suggest trying another jeweler, as 2-3 weeks is way longer than the 1-2 days I was quoted at my jeweler. Maybe try a place that would do it in house rather than send it out?

Until you can get it re dipped start taking it off every time you go near water. I always take mine off before I wash my hands, shower, put on lotion...anything. Hard water and lotions can tarnish it as well

White gold needs to be re-dipped every so often (frequency depends on wear and tear). Since it's just plated with other metals to appear white, so it'll naturally yellow with time.

Also- don't wear your ring in the shower!! It's not good for it and will cause extra wear. And if it falls off in the shower, good luck getting it back

I actually see what you mean on the underneath picture (I'm super picky and notice all changes with this stuff, my ring for instance doesn't look perfectly round on one side, and it annoyed the heck out of me, I'm the only one who sees it). Anyway take it to your jeweler. Be careful using cleaning substances at home, you can be cheap but ruining your ring will be an expense you won't like. When I got my e-ring FH told me to check the paperwork with it and I am required to take it to the store every six months to clean, and inspect.

If I don't comply with the schedule we lose the insurance from them. So make sure you check if you have the same policy, that's an important thing.

White gold will need to be re-dipped. Unfortunately white gold will turn after awhile. Mine goes every 6 months to be cleaned & inspected. I will have it dipped about a month before the wedding. They send it out so I want to be sure i have it in time.
