Where are my alternative brides??

Ali, on April 20, 2010 at 6:32 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

Fh and I have been trying to figure out our first song, but it's really hard because of our tastes in music. We both like rock/punk rock/alternative. Fh's favorite bands are NOFX, Bad Religion, Flogging Molly and mine are Avenged Sevenfold, Muse, Chevelle, etc.

But we both like the softer side like Postal Service and Eddie Vedder.

We did at first pick the song "Just Breathe" by Pearl Jam, but over the past couple of the months the radio has been playing the song like it's going out of style. Needless to say, we got bored of it quickly, especially living on campus where the radio is on 24/7.

Then I had the idea that we could have "Brand New Colony" by Postal Service and have some Bass Hunter played afterwards to get everyone on the dance floor.

Sorry if you guys have no idea what bands I'm talking about. I hope some of you know!

Soo, we need help with some suggestions about what we should do..

Should we look for an alternative song, or should we just pick something everyone can enjoy?

I'm assuming you're talking about your first dance song? If so, IMO, go with something you love! Don't worry about whether other people will like the song or not. It's not about them, it's about you!! We're kind of like you two -- he's into punk (especially Flogging Molly!!) and I'm into rockabilly, but we both love "Such Great Heights" by the Postal Service. We found the version by Iron and Wine much easier to slow dance to so that will be our first dance. Now to decide if our second dance will be swing or something a little punkier...

Maybe you should do a "Rock your wedding"? I showed FH (someone had a youtube link a few months back..maybe they can post it again) and he laughed saying "you want ME to do that?" We are going to pass on it, but it seemed like an excellent idea for folks who have a bunch of different songs they enjoy. And I Ditto Pumpkin....this is about you not your guests....go with what you both want!!!!

I say go with the alternative song. I love alternative, but my husband doesn't. We chose a standard first dance song (Theme from Ice Castles), which I like, but which didn't have any real meaning for us.

We actually had a dance later in the evening that was much more my style. I love the Smashing Pumpkins, so I chose Luna, off Siamese Dream. Not my favorite Pumpkins song, but it worked very well.

If you're going to pick an alternative song, just make sure it's slow enough to slow dance to (if that's what you want to do), and make sure the lyrics are not too odd. It really doesn't need to be a romantic song (since they are hard to find), but some slower alt/punk songs are really anti-romantic (or depressing).

Yes it is about our first dance song.

I like your choice of the Iron and Wine version, that was a good idea. I think I like the idea of a postal service song more and more..

@May2010Bride, do you mean the first dances where couples start off dancing to a slow song and surprise the guests with doing a dance of a bunch of different songs? I've seen that a lot, and to me, by now, it's very unoriginal just because everyone's doing it. Just my honest opinion =)

And I forgot to mention we have dance lessons that came with our DJ package, so hopefully whatever song we pick, the dance instructor will be able to make us look good dancing to it =)

@Melissa, I get what you're saying, and I agree. I definitely want the song to be lovey but alternative at the same time.. not depressing.

Ali, try the Vitamin String Quartet. It's a musical string band that re-does all different types of music. If you're walking down the aisle, or first dance they have a ton of beautiful remixes. I found everlong by foo fighters on there and I love that song. Check them out and let me know what you think. You may be able to pull off your alt. rock with a classic twist Smiley smile

FH and I have a similar problem. We both love hard rock, metal, and odd stuff. Like Tenacious D!

But we also like Phantom of the Opera, and he's letting me have my Beauty and the Beast songs. and I'm gonna make him let me have a few country songs, just because some of the love songs sound really good and aren't too cheesy.

I was gonna have him pick songs for the reception but I don't think that would work very well haha.

Luckily I have plenty of time to find SOMETHING that works for almost everyone.

I really like "Brand New Colony"--I think it would be a nice first dance song.

We're doing our first dance to Kelly Clarkson's "You Found Me" segueing into "Circus" by Britney Spears, but I'm walking down the aisle to "Queen of the Savages" by Magnetic Fields and FH is walking in to "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" by Timbuk 3. Oh, and the father/daughter dance is to Frank Zappa & the Mothers, and the mother/son dance is to "Because We Can Can Can" from Moulin Rouge. Lots of musical variety.
