When to start shopping for a wedding dress?

Eleanor, on December 3, 2020 at 3:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

I got engaged recently...YAY! We're thinking of doing a winter wedding (either December 2021 or January 2022). When would be a good time to start shopping for a dress? When would it be a good time to purchase? I just curious about how to time things. Thanks!

Congratulations on your engagement!! I would start looking now, typically around a year in advance. Go try on dresses in stores, look online to get an idea of what you like/don't like, etc. I recommend that you purchase the dress within 8-9 months of the wedding. That would give time for shipping and alterations without needing to be rushed.

Congratulations on your engagement and welcome to wedding wire!! You actually could start shopping for your dress now, since you are a year out. You can purchase your dress whenever you feel like you've found the one!

So exciting! Congrats on your engagement!

I agree with the previous comments. Shopping ahead of time is always recommended to get an idea of what silhouette/design you like. If there are parts of multiple dresses you like, you can see if a seamstress can add (or take off) to make your dream dress or you can also look into getting one custom made. Either way, definitely make sure you have time for shipping (and production if custom made) and for alterations.

Congratulations !!! you can start doing your research now to narrow down things you'd like. But to actually go dress shopping I'd say 10 months out. So like around Feb. My wedding is May, I got my dress in July and was able to order it customized.

You should start about 9 to 12 months out and purchase about 4 to 6 months out.

    Now! 😊
Some dresses can take a while to come in and you want to make sure you have time for alterations.
I started shopping a year in advance and wound up buying off the rack so it sat for a while, but at least I had it.

Bridal boutique typically suggest ordering your dress at least 10 months before your wedding. This allows time for your dress to arrive and any alterations to be made. I would start shopping after the first of the year. That should give you plenty of time.
