When to Shop for BM Dresses With One TTC?

Pancakes, on December 16, 2014 at 9:21 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

My MOH told me (and only me, no one else knows and she wants to keep it that way until it happens) that she is beginning to try for a baby and they were hoping to have one around the time of our wedding. That's great news. They are an awesome couple, great people and she is a sweetheart. But I don't know when to start shopping for bridesmaid dresses because I don't know when and how much she will be showing. I want to pick a dress that she will feel beautiful in even if she is super preggo and not feeling up to par. But I can't explain this to my other girls until she actually gets pregnant! Smiley smile

So when do we start looking for dresses? I want to make sure we get dresses that work for her whether she is pregnant or not, and showing bump or not. But I also do not want to wait until the last minute. All of my girls already have July/August booked in their schedules. Should we go in May? Thanks!

I went with my bridesmaids in September and October for my June wedding...dresses were ordered two weeks ago.

It depends on how long it takes to get in. My dresses took 4 months, so May would be okay. You could get a feel for what type of dress/style you like and ask the shop what the shipping schedule is on them in general to see when the latest you can order would be. It's very nice of you to think of her this way.

I would check to see how long it would take the dresses you like to come in and then pick when to go. Additionally, she can talk to the dress consultant and let her know she might be pregnant and then can discuss their options.

I needed to get my dresses in October (7 mos prior to the wedding) - this ended up 6 mos for the dresses to come in and 1 month for alternations.

My BFF was a MOH and ordered the dress then found out she was preg. She was able to work it out with the bridal shop (I think it was J.Crew) to get a larger size dress to accommodate her bump.

My BMs chose a style that not only compliments all their figures but also has room in case of any pregnancies. My FSIL keeps having dreams that she's going to be pregnant for the wedding like she was for FBIL's wedding a few years ago.

Oh yikes. I didn't realize some bridesmaid dresses took that long to come in! I don't know if we would choose any that were super pricey and designer and would take months to get in. Because either I'm paying for them or my girl's are (if I find it is not in the budget) so I want to keep the dress cheap.

My dress isn't coming in until February/March. What do you think about me trying on my dress in the salon in January so the girls can try on bridesmaids dresses next to my dress? Is that strange. The girl's haven't seen my dress in person and have been asking. I am too embarrassed to ask the store to come in again just to try on a dress I already bought but don't have yet Smiley smile

That's what the salon told me but I would ask. Your wedding is in October so I would start looking and then ask. I looked online first, then went with my MOH and we picked 3 styles (off shoulder, v neck and strapless) or the the girls to pick from. We did this in July and then asked about the timing. We went in August as a group so the girls can pick the style they wanted but then the girls went in when they wanted to get measured.

Thanks, Denise. I wasn't sure if going in January/February would be too early, but that is when I know we all will have time to at least look and pick out styles and then give us time to wait for sales Smiley smile I was only a bridesmaid once and I don't remember how early we went. I just know that I have a $180 floor length, black, A-Line dress in my closet that I will probably never wear again and I don't want to do that to my girls! (even though they said they didn't care about price. I do)

My MOH just found out she was pregnant the day before Thanksgiving and she's due around the end of July, early August. She ordered her dress 2 sizes larger than her current size, and we plan on splitting the costs of any alterations it needs for the wedding. We figured this was the best week to go since I have to order by the beginning of July for them to guarantee the dresses 4 weeks before the wedding.

If you pick a dress where tea length is an option, you can have it hemmed to knee length right before the wedding, with plenty of fabric to cover a big baby bump Smiley smile

One of my BMs also told me that she and her husband are TTC. We picked a dress for all of the girls that is flowy and has a waistline that could accommodate a pregnant belly. Luckily the dress is from David's Bridal and won't take too long to come in, so for my August wedding she can wait quite a while to find out if she is pregnant and how far along she will be at that time so she can order a size that will be correct. The people there have dealt with pregnant brides and bridesmaids before and seemed to know how much size to add to accommodate baby bumps.

One of my BMs is due 3 weeks before my wedding. You are lucky...its your MOH who you could have stand out anyway. I would say start shopping at about 6 months before. By then theres less of a chance she'll be showing a lot for your wedding. Have her order a dress a few sizes bigger just in case. She can always take it in. If worse comes to worse maybe she can find a different dress later on. She is the MOH so she can be different. Check out Alfred Angelo too cuz they have maternity BM dresses. Most importantly, remember that this baby is just as important to her as your wedding is to you. If she cant stand with you or is worrying about leaving a newborn or feeling fat-do everything you can to accomodate her (within reason). This is huge for her and she will want your support just as much as you want hers.

I'm TTC and bought my wedding dress a size up in case i needed to have the extra space. i'd say a max of 6 months out from the wedding, because there will be some idea of how big or far along she might be. but keep in mind that if she doesn't end up pregnant it could really mess with her to have to alter a dress way back down, so talk to the store about all exchange options and save altering for the end of the time frame. i have the ability to exchange my DB dress as long as i havent altered it.

My MOH is pregnant and due about a month before my wedding. She tried on her dress before she was showing too much and ordered two different sizes. JCrew will give her a full refund on whichever dress she returns and they gave her an extended time period to return the dress. The attendant also gave her recommendations on what sizes she should order. Definitely tell the person helping you with bridesmaids dresses the situation, even if it means going with just your MOH one time and your other bridesmaids another time. It won't be the first time they've dealt with it and they will come up with solutions you didn't even know were available.

Makes sense that they would know what sizes to order and whatnot since they deal with it more often. Thanks, everyone! I'm sure everything will work out Smiley smile

My BM (FSIL) Is due July 25th, and our wedding is: April 18th! I am so excited but worried about the dress size. ideally i gave my girls by January to get theirs. I told her that she needs to go to DB and havethe seamstress look at where she "might be" and get a bigger size! Ours is an empire waist and long so thank goodness, regardless of how big her bump gets, itll fit! I think my FSIL is more worried about being top heavy!!
