6-8 months before the wedding or up to a year in advance for a destination wedding.

It depends on how many of your guests will have to travel! If everyone is local, you can send them 6-8 months before the wedding. If you have more guests traveling, I'd do 8-10 months before the wedding. If it's a destination wedding or is during a holiday, I might even do one year before the wedding.

For us, 2/3 of our guests will be traveling from out-of-state so we just sent this month (10 months before the wedding).

We have a unique situation. We get married on November 27th, 2020 which is the day after Thanksgiving. We are sending our save-the-dates out by this Friday so that they arrive before Thanksgiving. Since most people make their next year Thanksgiving plans during the current Thanksgiving, we want to give everyone plenty of time to figure out whether they'll be willing to spend Thanksgiving with us at our rehearsal dinner (all guests are invited) or if they'd rather stick with their traditions.
