When to buy wedding dress?

bevbabe, on February 8, 2022 at 11:17 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

So I just found out I'm pregnant and I'm not sure when to buy my wedding dress. We were doing a long engagement anyway so it doesn't really interfere with our plans. I could buy it in the next few months while I'm still not showing or after I give birth when there is 9 months until the wedding. Is 9 months enough time to order a designer wedding dress and do all the fittings?

I think 9 months is probably enough time, but you may have to pay a rush fee. I would ask the bridal boutique that you plan to shop at, and see if they can give you an estimate for how long it's taking their orders to come in.

I don’t think I’d buy now as your body will change. However, even though your wedding is 9 months after baby arrives, how long will it take you body to return to “normal”? I know it can take a couple of months for your belly to go back down (don’t know the right way to say that) so if that’s the case you may not want to get a dress that soon since your body will look different and have different measurements.
I personally would wait and then get a dress off the rack and have it altered as needed. That way you see it on the body you’ll have closer to the wedding, you don’t have to worry about loosing baby weight, you do t have to worry if it will be right size when it gets here. Congrats and good luck!

As much as I understand people telling you to wait due to body changes, I cannot imagine as a mother of a newborn you're going to have the capacity to find, order, and fit a dress within a typical timeline. Personally, I'd go to a bridal shop and explain the situation. Maybe they can suggest going up a size and say if they'd be capable of doing adjustments up or down, or maybe they know they get a lot of stock in or around your size and are confident you can get something off the rack a little closer to your wedding without having to choose between going out shopping after JUST giving birth in order to order on time, or scramble last second. Hopefully someone can be helpful! ❤

Could you get a dress that would accommodate a slightly changing shape? My SIL was 6 months pregnant at their wedding (which is a slightly different scenario, but still touches on the same issue - a different shape when buying the dress than when wearing it) - and she got a kind of... wrap dress in a thick crepe that could easily be adjusted to whatever size she was. It was a lot thicker than this fabric, but is a similar idea, and seemed to work really well:

The reception dress I liked looks a lot like this. I think I'm going to explain the situation to the bridal consultants when I look and see what they say. Hopefully they can give me options of things that can be altered just in case. Or advice me when it's best to order. I'll probably order a size up and then they can always just take it in if I can lose the baby weight.

Yes that's a good idea - it means there's no pressure on you either way which is good - it's so hard to know how you'll feel or what your body will do!
